So you took out a hedge of Julias?

Kristine, I took out only 3 dead ones, but i decided to try something new instead of putting new Julias in. Bring Me Sunshine might blend in once it's mature.

The remaining Julias look great. How is your Bring Me Sunshine coming along? I bought one BMS this spring too, I do not see buds at the end of rather long canes yet, which is a bit worrisome, don’t want another blind shooter.

Bent, so far it is putting out ocotopus canes but with some buds at the end of each. Each cane is about 2 ft long and some are laying flat on the ground, it is worrisome indeed. Fingers crossed that it's not stingy.

Oh no Hoang, I think I am allergic to stingy, weedy Austins with sprawly canes and blooms only at the ends. We have had a perfect cool wet yet sunny spring, and Bring Me Sunshine is the only rose out of 150+ varieties that thinks it is an octopus. Even Summer Song and Gertrude Jekyll are on their best behavior. I very much hoping it makes a change for the better, too.

Ben, Gertrude behaves for you? Mine is octopusy and stingy lol.

Please continue the reports on Bring Me Sunshine, Hoang Ton, and Ben. I am allergic to the same things Ben is. I have some Austins that shoot out octopus canes in September, and I can take that, but they do not shoot them out in spring, nor did they when they were first growing. So, that's not good news about BMS.

Hoang Ton, why didn't you replace the Julias with more Julias? Yours are perfectly lovely, and it would have been simpler. Good luck with Bring Me. Maybe he will straighten up before long. Diane

When I first grew Gertrude on Fortuniana in Texas, I thought it was a joke…all sprawly canes, no blooms , only thorns. Later I read Dr Malcolm Manners say some Austins become vegetative on Fort, Now I have Gertrude own-root in California. I pinned down all the canes of my young plant and get lots of short laterals with buds at the end.

Yes, some sprawly canes in late summer is acceptable, but not for a 1st spring flush!

DIane, I will post BMS as soon as it blooms. As for the JC hedge, I initially did replaced them with another more JCs but they were slow to start so I transplanted the smaller JCs and thought I will try something different. I have to remind you that JC will not look this good in the summer lol, at my area anyway.

Ben, thanks for the interesting information. My Gertrude is on ownroot and it's stingy. I'll try your method.
