Ah thanks, Texas Dandelion (Pyrrhopappus carolinianus), duh! I just didn't recognize it because it grew so leggy in the shade...

It's a cool native that I'd grow in a southwestern style garden. Im growing a similar type aster from seed called 2 Flowered Cynthia. It looks like a cross between a lettuce and a hawkweed. The colorful flowered Emelia species are similar looking. I had to be careful weeding around them, because their leaves look exactly wild lettuce.

Pilosella is an introduced species here and in N. America and it will spread a lot.

Pilosella grew in the pine woodlands of northern Wisconsin, when my family vacationed there in the 60s. It was so common that I believed it was endemic to the area. They were mostly single plants loosely scattered, no huge clumps. There were'nt many other plants in those woods to outcompete. I grew it for a couple years and then stopped. Ive never seen it anywhere else except Wisconsin and my garden.
