Anyone notice there is a freeze warning tonight?

It's pretty late for 32F temps. I don't have any veggies or annuals growing, but what about perennials and roses? Geez....and my Japanese Maple that suffered die back last year was just recovering and about to open it's leaves right now! I can't possibly cover everything that is growing.

Anyone else trying to figure out the best way to protect things?

When I lived in Mass 50 years ago the frost free date was Memorial Day--zone 5A.

Good morning! So, I fell asleep early and never got out there to cover anything. I did wake up @ 2a. and went out to check the temp. It was 40F on my thermometer. I still covered a few things with sheets and pillow cases and went back to bed.

At 6a, it was still 40F. So I went to find the local weather forecast....sure enough, she was saying that it was in the upper 20s in the area where I am. and Boston was 38F. This is not unusual for me. I seem to be almost always off from whatever the temps are they are reporting. But that's a big difference. I'm not complaining lol

I am in zone 6b, laceyvail. according to the latest zone map, and usually if I get to the end of April, I rarely have any temperature issues after that.

If anyone knows anyone on Martha's Vineyard, the weather person said it was 22F on Martha's Vineyard this morning! That is horrible. I can't imagine what that might do to gardens.

rosaprimula, thanks for the explanation about the 'internal anti-freeze' and that facing East is the worst position. That is where just about all my full sun plants are, so I concentrated on that, although clearly it was unnecessary.

Zone has nothing to do with the date of the last spring frost. That depends mostly on latitude. So just because the zone has changed doesn't mean you've moved farther south.

Last year, we had a freeze the third week of May. The annuals had been put out May 15th, I think, and we did lose some.

This time of year, a freeze warning is just boring noise.

OMG PM2, you are indeed dedicated to be going out at 2am to cover things! I didn't know there was a freeze warning and was surprised to come outside at 5:45 am and have to defrost my car! But luckily for me I only had one impulse-buy pot of rosemary outside. Some potted shrubs and perennials waiting to go in the ground but they of course were fine. And as usual I'm procrastinating with my wintersowing so my containers were still closed up.

I hope you didn't lose anything!

    :)

Thanks Dee, no I didn't lose anything at all. I wake up in the middle of the night more often than not. [g] I had planned to go out before I fell asleep and didn't, so that just popped into my head when I woke up. It was only a handful of plants that I covered with sheets and a couple of pillow cases. Roses mainly. I don't think it was as cold as they forecast anyway. The forecast gave different temps for different parts of the state. There was a thin layer of ice on the birdbath though.

I think that should be the end of it. It was cool here all day until I noticed about 8pm that it was quite balmy out so we seem to have shifted now into warm.
