are these kitchen cabinets worth keeping?

How do you know if cabinets are worth keeping? I don’t mind the color but lots of wear and tear from previous owners who didn’t use hardware. They tried to color in some of the worn areas but it looks like purple marker now. What are good options to keep these but make them nice again or save up and get all new?

Really if you replaced the cabinets you would want to rework the layout, so this would be an expensive renovation.

With their condition I don't think you have anything to lose if you painted them in the interim.

how many cabinets are worn in that way ? because its not showing on the couple of pics. if its a segregated area..or for example only a few uppers I would think about painting the uppers a white. The counters are white so it would be easy to have this fit together , and it would save painting everything. They are older cabinets , so to save for a bigger full reno later would be a good approach. Also you have a large number of wall cabs....if the badly worn ones were removed...can you envision DIY paint and re use them in garage/ basement or other ...then shift some of the better ones into spots that you need them to be.

you can pick the paint shade to work w the existing counters......

You could always reface the cabinet doors and repaint everything to salvage them.

What about trying a stain marker? Maybe you will find a better color than the previous owners did and doing some touch ups every now and then would be cheaper and easier than painting.

Agree with blueskysunnyday - go get a stain marker - available at any hardware or home store. They usually come in packs of different stain colors so you can try one or two to be sure you’re getting a good match. I have used them a lot on various wood surfaces and furniture, and they have never turned purple?! Regardless of what you eventually do, go get some stain markers in the meantime to touch up those bad areas for an inexpensive, if only temporary fix!
