Should I give up on light purple roses?

last year

I'm starting to think light purple roses are better for colder climates. Am I wrong? The purple roses I have do not last long. The longest lasting one I have is angel face and the bloom last 3 days.

I have Violet's Pride , healthy & blooms a lot but blows away in a couple of days .

Had Love Song but shovel pruned it because of disease . Poseidon also gone because it was tall & lanky and blooms fried in the heat .

Have Silver Lining new this year as a band from High Country Roses , don't know if I like it or not yet . Very pale grey lilac loose petaled blooms .

    Pink Rose,

I have VP too and Silver Lining. It finally bloomed this year and I have had it for three years now. Unfortunately, I was not home to see how long it lasted. Just saw it on my security camera =\

These purple roses look so enticing but I'm scared of them being duds like my SL.

Where did you get Silver Lining ? Is it own root ?

  • last year

I got it from a Nursery called Armstrong that gets it from Otto and Sons. Its grafted.

try love song ! it lasts a while . i also have one called illias , a japanese rose that blooms last a very long time

I have many--both Blue Girl and Le Petit Prince hang on longer than most in heat, as does my Love Song in partial shade.

Of course, nothing blooms in summer.

Ben that English Perfume is divine! Where did you get it from?

    sautesmom Sacramento

I like the petite prince just because of the name =) can you tell me more about it?

    Jen,

Your love song is beautiful! Can you tell me about your illias rose?

English Perfume came from RU. I’m very impressed, blooms are over 5”, very full fluffy and long lasting this spring.

  • last year

Ben, I'm impressed too! Do you grow this rose too Repartir ?

Pink rose, do you have pictures of your Silver Lining. I loved it in the High Country Roses green house and would like to see the bush shape.

I've grown two Love Song for years, and it's my favorite lavender rose. But almost tied with LS is Angel Face, and I'm getting a second in a few days. I've grown AF for many years with no problem, but we have no fungal disease here. Angel Face has one of the best scents and does well in bouquets. Love Song is a good bouquet rose, too. Diane

Diane, I could literally swoon over your pics for days and not be bored. You have the BEST roses. I just love the way you’ve set up your garden. Everything intermingles in such a beautiful way. It all flows and has this wonderful magic feel to it. how did you plan it all? i struggle with interplanting/ figuring out what and how to plant within/ next to the roses

Jemma, Our summers are blistering hot and dry, and Love Song does very well through it all. Angel Face takes more breaks between bloomings. Keep trying with the purples and lavenders. I couldn't be without them. Maybe I've mentioned this before, but I love your name. My younger granddaughter is Jemma, and spelled with a J, too. Are you along the coast or inland? Diane

Sophia, thank you so much. I haven't really given too much thought where my roses go because everything is so crowded here, and a rose goes in where there is space. It is important to me to have a lot of perennials and other plantings. I want an informal cottage look, so things have taken a long time building up. I do remove plants, but my favorite thing is an easy plant that reseeds itself and pops up in just the right place. I'm very lazy and old, so these plants are perfect for me. And all of them are hated by deer. Are you in the dry West by any chance? I'll get back to you on the seasonal thread later tonight. If you have a place with good drainage, get lavender! Every pollinator loves it, and I love it, too. I just wish I could squeeze it in more places where I could view it easily, instead of way in back. Diane

Diane, I'm right in the central area of San Diego so not coastal and not too inland. 15 minutes to the beach and 12 min to the airport from my house. If I was not obsessed with roses I would say I have a good thing already.

I love everyone's love song but on my screen it does not look purple. It looks more pinkish to me.

Jemma, Love Song is most definitely purple, and Angel Face is just slightly more pink at times. Diane

Pink Rose, thanks for the band picture. That is a gorgeous band! I was hoping to see how the bush shape was as it matures in the ground.

Quicksilver is my longest lasting one.

Jemma, is this rose blue enough for you? Diane

  • last year

I think you definitely get truer, bluer tones in cooler climates. Love Song does really well for me too, but in summer it’s more lilac-pink. I catch those lovely cool lavender tones in Spring only. Excuse the arty close-up!

  • last year

Jemma, I wonder if your lilac roses would last any longer if you tried watering them or mulching them more. I was about to give up on Quicksilver. I have so many challenging spots in my garden and I planted Quicksilver in a fairly challenging spot with root competition from a pear tree and some shade. For a few years I had zero good blooms but thought I'd better hang in there with it.

This year we had good rain and finally it had a few pretty blooms and I do mean just a few. But I was so happy to see them and hope for more in the future. I think the rain did it plus age on the plant.

It was relatively lavender...a little more lavender than the camera picks up. Thick petalled lavenders might last longer but it looks like a lot of people in hot areas have luck with Love Song. I want to try that one.

  • last year

Diane, what was that last rose😍? Thanks for the name compliment.

erasmus_gw , My heirloom blooms a lot but I should try mulching her more. Next time I'm in cali I will do that. All my roses are currently in pots.

I have several other lavender roses blooming today - this is my favorite color for roses! Perfume Factory, Heirloom, Lagerfeld and Love Song.

  • last year

Jemma, that rose you asked about above is Blue Bayou, and the photos are sort of a joke I post every so often when someone wants a really blue rose. I grew it, got it from Hortico when I got my Bernstein roses about 2008. It was the bluest rose I'd ever seen. It was never available in the US, but sold some in Europe, I think. It's Kordes. It did pretty well for quite a few years and then declined really badly. I removed it a couple of years ago. I should have taken a cutting, but I just never did. Diane

Quick Silver is great here. A decent sized climber. I have 4 of them. ( 2 own root and 2 grafted)

Spirit of Freedom. I grow several of these. Cant be beat for fragrance, beauty, vigor, and health. Is usually a lilac lavender here.

Sultry, love your Spirit of Freedom and your Brumansia is wonderful

I'm ashamed, I forgot to thank everyone for ALL your wonderful pictures. I posted this around the time I was driving to FL from Texas. It was so hectic. I was missing my garden then.
