You never cover wood with plastic. Not only is that a huge huge downgrade, but it also rots out the wood, and creates all kinds of issues for the vinyl to buckle as the wood moves around under it.

I am no pro; just someone who likes real wood floors. I understand the logistics of refinishing an entire wood floor while living there. And with a family, dog - yes, a big pain. But if your floors are truly re-finishable (ie, not thin laminate) then I think you should reconsider. I have all real wood on both levels of my home and the first floor looks like i need to do this in the next couple years. Figure out a plan and bite the bullet.

Well, doesn't LVP always wind up going over some kind of wood, even if it's subfloor?
