A basic (but by no-means fool proof) image search turns up "red shouldered hawk" as the result.

Thanks - he's much bigger than the small hawks we usually get.

I know what you mean - I had to look twice. He may have been eating berries. Yesterday my DH saw him eating a mouse, but I don't know about the color -

He is beautiful. We have large hawks and eagles here. There's a river down the road about a mile away so there are lots of birds of prey. The Florida Red Tailed Hawks make their rounds several times a day, circling over the woods and pastures, as well as the Black Turkey Vultures. Our free ranging chickens and guineas quickly duck & hide under shrubs, the barn, or their coop or they will be dinner. Hawks usually grab squirrels or rats, or mice. I've seen them with an occasional small snake or lizard. At our old house, one grabbed a little black kitten but I was outside and yelled and he released it!

Sultry I love the turkey vultures 💜 they're only in my area for a few short months of the year so I always look forward to seeing them. I see hawks carrying snakes here all the time! We also have a lot of great horned owls, bald eagles and ospreys near my house so I feel very lucky about that.

Mischevious Magpie, Thats really neat that you have so many birds too.! The turkey vultures are sure good at keeping the road kill cleaned up.

I love owls. We have mostly Barred Owls. I have seen a few Great Horned Owls. They are impressive but its mostly the Barred Owls we see & hear. Sometimes, they are even out in the afternoon calling, "Whooo whoo who cooks for you?" During mating season, they congregate in the Live Oak Trees and make loud crazy monkey noises in the middle of the night. They are so funny! Supposedly, there are healthy populations of Eastern Screech Owls and Barn Owls here but I've yet to see any at this new property. I think the Barred Owls keep some of the smaller owls away.

I keep hoping a Barn Owl will show up in our barn one day. There are barn swallows that make nests inside,right above the sliding doors on both ends. They swoop in and out of the barn bringing the noisy babies food. I leave the doors open and we have put gates across the openings.
