To reupholster or not?

last year

I have two gently used Mitchell & Gold Reese club chairs that I bought new a few years ago. Is it worth reupholstering them? Should I buy new instead? Thanks.

I rarely find reupholstery worth the money unless the piece is an antique and even then the cost is crazy. Why do you want to reupholster ? Is the fabric in bad shape or just does not work in your space . Is the cushon still in good shape ?A few years ago???? I need more info. I saw some on google for $450 so IMO that would say not worth the cost.

If you have a good reupholster in your area it might be worth it. The reason I like to reupholster is that I can then use any fabric I want. These days I like to use indoor/outdoor fabrics that are wear and stain resistant. The selection of the I/O fabrics is amazing these days and nothing like the old original canvas-like sunbrella fabrics, but they aren't cheap.

I would price out all the different options and then decide.

If you love the chairs and/or if the quality is good - then yes, it is worth reupholstering. If money is a concern, I would think out of the box. Look for a good, local upholsterer, who has what you consider to be fair prices. Shop around. You can also sometimes potentially save by acquiring and supplying your own fabric. That way, you are also not limited to the upholsterer’s fabric selections.

Why would you buy new when the chairs have been gently used?

Thanks, Everyone, for this input. I either need new or reupholster as the existing fabric does not work in our new home.

The retail price for these that I found was $2200. How much did you pay for the chairs, and how much would you expect to pay for a new chair of the same quality. And would you be able to get the new chairs in the perfect fabric?

All of my furniture is older and has reupholstered --but all over 50 years old--better quality than you would get now, so it's all worth reupholstering, and both upholsterers I work with can get any fabric I want.

If the furniture was made within the past 20 years it may be less worthwhile to reupholster if you can find something comparable.

Do you like it? Is it comfortable? Could you buy something similar for the price of upholstery and fabric? Nothing else matters really. I had two cb2 chairs reupholstered because the seat cushions went (shocking!) and the fabric stained. Redid them in sunbrella and they look great ten years later. Totally worth it to me.

I'm a big fan of reupholstering furniture because you can choose exactly the fabric that you want.

If you reupholster, consider upgrading the cushioning material.

Do you have a picture of the chairs? $2300 each is not pocket change. And even at 8 years ago, there is no guarantee that you would find the same quality for that price now in a new chair. It depends. If you are willing to spend 2300 a piece for two new chairs - you can for sure get these two reupholstered for that price - no matter where you live. And you should also be able to get them reupholstered for less than that.
