Thank you @yvonnemartin. I hope this gives you an idea of the room. Very little sunlight except late afternoon so it’s pretty dark. I have another family china cabinet in corner but hesitate to post a pic of that because it has a deer mount on wall above, and I know that’s tacky but can’t get rid of that (yet). And I hate my dark wood floors but I can’t get rid of them, lol.

There are formulas about how high to mount a TV and yours is too high. I would keep the lovely antique dresser where it is and set your TV on it. Then get a large mirror to place above your fireplace. It will help bounce around the little light you get in the room.

The dresser is a very pretty piece and looks great with the color of your wall.

Ugh! I had a mirror above the fireplace and the tv on a tv stand where the buffet is now! I switched it last year!

I think your antique piece is lovely. What’s important is that you love it and feel it works for your house and needs.

It could easily be a bedroom dresser so if there’s a guest room that’s not full, you can use it there.

What a great piece! If you no longer want it in that room, searching your home for a new space is a great idea.

If I keep it and don’t place my tv on it, I’d love suggestions for items to enhance it. A lamp? A vase? A stack of books? A plant? I don’t have many decor items because I struggle with what looks good.

It fits perfect in your room! I would leave it. Nice and unique furniture.

It's really nice. It's a little dark and bossy but you could break up the darkness a bit with a collection of nicely framed family photos on the top. Or you could do a large colorful long low bowl or even a collection of succulents in bright pots.

I think I’ d put the TV on it but I see that’s a hassle.

Do you have a bar? It would be a great bar.

It’s really very nice! I like Kendra’s suggestion for the TV. However, if you just use it for decor, I’d keep it simple.

My sister and I got sucked into that antique thing. Glad I got past that, although I still have a 1830 couch in storage at my husband's office (we called it the death couch it was so horrible to sit on).

I think it looks fine in your house. But if you are tired of it, RedRyder's suggestion is great or sell it on Facebook Marketplace. You can always list it and see.

Beautiful buffet! Since there is already a lot going on at the top, I would do just a shallow decorative bowl in the middle.

I think it's lovely and looks right at home in your room. I also think some of the suggested photos are good ideas on how to style it. I wouldn't do the the TV thing if space is not an issue.

I would put a plant that "spills" like and ivy on one side to soften the darkness of the piece. Use a pretty decorative pot that complements the pics above the buffet.

Love the idea of replacing the rug.

Wow! Thank you so much for the suggestions everyone. I already purchased the ‘spilling’ plant, and will repot it. I will look for smallish lamp(s). I agree minimal decor is best. I have been minimizing a lot over the last couple years. I can’t believe the difference with a different rug. Love the look!

I'd remove art from above & not replace with anything (an empty space is sometimes the best choice). Beverly is right - a different rug changes the whole room. What size do you need?

@redryder I think the current rug is 9x12 or 10x12.

I would relocate it to a bedroom or dining room, then position the chairs so that they are flanking the fireplace. This arrangement would be so much nicer.

For a small lamp on the antique piece, something whimsical would be nice. You would have to find it at a flea market, tag sale r unusual store. Or Anthropologie like this one.

I dont see us as past antique craze. if it is meaningful or you just like it its great. they have character & bring so much to a space. i dont like them covered woth nic nacs but the piece itself is wonderful. i have several & several i got rod of that i wish id kept. thesepieces are typically made of real wood!

Keep in mind that you're inviting some design pros and people with a design eye into your home via photos. If they walked into your actual space, they would take in all of it: all four sides, doorways, floors, windows, ceiling, trim--the "givens"--then the features that can be changed--furnishings, paint, art, rugs, decor items, etc. It's all one first impression. Same thing with photos. That's why it's important to provide well lit photos of the entire space, taken from all sides of a room regardless of the size of your problem.

I think the piece is lovely and works in the room. At first glance though it felt more like a dresser and realized the prints above were creating a more delicate impression. Also, given the collage on the other wall and additional prints near windows, suggest removing anyway (less can be more) then experiment with accessories

On the subject of the collage, its arrangement feels awkward (in photo anyway). It might feel more balanced centered over the seating (and not with a visual slant). IMO that is where the TV shuld go so I am for losing it after 30 yrs.

Gorgeous piece of furniture! There's no way I would ever let it go. Use it and enjoy it.

Just a thought, but sometimes the back is just screwed on so you could remove it without damaging the piece. This might make it more appealing for your space without being so overwhelming.

Try the 3 prints vertically on narrow wall on right and I’m sure once you accessorize, it will feel balanced.

If you love it or find it useful, keep it. This is the rule l’m using editing a home afer 35 years. 😀

If you decide to keep it, I would experiment with accessories. I think this look is quite nice. The white pieces lighten up the look.

There's a lot going on in the room, so:

--Remove the small prints over the buffet. It's is a beautiful piece that enhances the room. Just leave it plain. If you want to make it more functional, and you entertain, then use it as a bar.

--Your wood floors look fine--not sure why you don't like them. Do think about a new rug that works well with those floors but lightens the room. Beverly's suggestions are great.

--If you're up for changing out all the art and find something large and wonderful, then hang a large art work you like where you have the gallery wall--something that echoes the outdoors and gives you another "window."

A bar would be nice there.

After seeing this piece in the context of the rest of the room I'm still going to advise you to keep it. However, the piece is so dark it seems a bit out of place. It looks like the finish has darkened over time. So, am going to suggest you either refinish or have the piece refinished to restore it to a lighter color.

Agree, the piece is so dark it is looming over the space. That’s why i suggest brightening it up with accessories. It would also make more sense in the space if it serves a function, such as a bar.

The piece is lovely, it the seating arrangement that is the problem. It feels like everyone is circled round a campfire with the chairs placed at an angle. It would be useful to see what it looks like to have the single armchair perpendicular to the sofa. The pair of armchairs are too large, you need a love seat placed perpendicular to the sofa.
