1” square tile on shower floor versus 2”

last year

Wondering if anyone could help me with this. We picked out our shower tile months ago for a house we are building in Florida: shower floor is 2 in.² EcoStone Venato. The supplier now tells us the 2 in.² is no longer available, but we could go with 1 in.². I included photos of both. Wondering if anyone has had problems with smaller shower tile. I don’t really want to have to fly to Florida to pick out new tile at this stage in the game. But, I also want something that looks nice and isn’t that much of a pain to clean.

1" will just be more grout line, and a bit more time on the install. The benefit is it will be less slippery that the 2" which would not have been slippery really at all.

I’m just wondering about the look of it, especially in a fairly large shower. Thinking of maybe going with hexagonal or penny tile instead. Do you think the smaller squares are dated?

No, I would not worry about dated,

I love hex tile, but I’ve seen many reports on these boards about problems with installation of penny tile. Just saying.

We have hex, but did 2" on the floor and 1" for the shower floor. They didn't even end up being the same tile because of some QC issues with the tile, but no one can tell with the shower glass in between. I like having the smaller tile in the shower for better grip.

I'm assuming your floor tile and shower floor tile are the same, just a different size?

The 1" mosaic for shower floor should be fine, but for a nicer look, I recommend you use the floor tile and make a border in the shower and place 1" mosaic inside. It give a "calmer" look and you don't have all those grout lines meeting the floor to wall transition.

Floor tile is cut to make the border. This example has a 2" mosaic, but would look the same. Adjust width of the border to be proportional to the shower size.

Love @chispa 's suggestion. (And the wall tile in the example.)

I would not go with penny tile - lots of grout. And if it isn't installed properly, the seams are visible. It sounds like you won't be there during install so I would pick something more straight forward.

What are you using on the rest of the bathroom floor? I‘ve seen several showers where the floor tile was cut into 2” squares - not sure how much $ that would add to the install.

I would rather do a 2” hexagon vs. 1” square tiles (just too busy + double the grout).

Personally, I’ve never been a fan of penny tile (so, I might be a bit biased against it) - but I’ve also seen quite a few issues re: install.

Also, it seems like designers are ”over” using penny tiles - but if you love them, that’s what matters (I’m sure that hexagons will fall out of favor also - maybe they already are on their way out?)
