You should pick a color that goes with your furnishings. Not just a fireplace.

I agree and why brown at all. Get the TV off the FP to start then show us your furniture that and the flooring drive wall color .

Struggling with this because eventually well be replacing the furniture we have now which is a collection of old furniture from old apartments! And I HATE pretty much everything in the room from the drapes to the carpet to the fireplace which all were here when we moved in. my goal is to just hate it less until i can afford a full overhaul!

I would select a paint color close to natural linen. That will work with your fireplace and these lovely chairs.

I don't mind the gray sofa. It's the lounge chair that needs to be replaced.

The light carpet and off white walls indicate the previous owners wanted light and bright. Are you going to replace the carpet? It looks like you've removed it from the stairs? I would look for something in between the current color and what looks like a Samplize sample you have on the wall next to the fireplace. Maybe BM Edgecomb Gray or SW Accessible Beige. What is the color on the sample?
