Backlit bud of William Lobb. Still just a tad early for blooms (I've only got one rose blooming) but lot of buds to admire!

I don’t have any of these, but I love seeing them. Especially Mme. Plantier.

I took a few pictures of Alba semi-plena and common moss this afternoon.

Semi-plena doesn't grow large here but it has sent up suckers all around my front yard:

It was hard to take this picture but here are semi-plena and common moss intertwining:

I only have one Centifolia, a young Fantin-Latour and this is the first year I’ve gotten a real spring flush, I love the matte blue green leaves and of course the blooms are gorgeous.

Henri Martin in the morning light. May be common but still a favorite of mine.

Paul Barden’s Sugar Jangle - first bloom on a brand new band from RVR.

Salat will be blooming soon and I have a new bare root William Lobb as well that I’m excited about. I also have Nightmoss and Fara Shimbo as bands from RVR this year but no blooms yet.

Here's Shailer's Provence. If you're ever tempted to buy this one be sure you have a place for it where it can spread out as much as it wants. I planted it in a bed and it tries to take over the bed..it comes up right in other roses . It's pretty but too much suckering for this spot.

Rose des Peintres..a healthy thing ( Centifolia)

    Rene d'Anjou , moss

@Formerly RBEHS Z10A/S17 I’m so glad you grow Semi Plena, too. Mine hasn’t suckered much…yet. But I will keep and eye on it and a spade handy. I love Common Moss! There’s one in my neighborhood, and I am mustering the courage to ask for a start.

@Heather RR I see that you are also PNW. It’s wonderful seeing how these old roses grow in your garden. I think they tend to grow very well here as long as we sidestep the ones prone to blackspot. Henri Martin is a classic! I wish I could tuck him in. I have a young Wm Lobb in a pot because I ran out of room but want to grow him. Someday he may jailbreak, though. I also grow Salet (from Vintage Gardens before it closed). My plant may not bloom this year as I had to dig it up and pot it up during some repairs. WHAT IS SUGAR JANGLE?? I though I knew all the Barden roses by name. Please post the bloom when it opens. I’m dying to see it!

Erasmus, thank you for posting more pics of your GORGEOUS roses!! It’s interesting to know that Rose des Peintres is both healthy and so beautiful. I’ve been very curious about it after I saw it on the Palatine site. How is the scent?

Rosa alba Maiden’s Blush is opening.

I'm embarrassed that I don't remember the scent, Portland. That doesn't mean it's not a strong scent. I'm just getting old. I did get mine from Palatine.

@portlandmysteryrose your GMB is *beautiful* !! You're the reason I have mine. I think about that whenever I go to inspect how it's coming along :) so far very healthy and putting on lots of buds, I'm so excited!

Magpie, I can hardly wait to see your MB in bloom! It warms my heart that I persuaded you to grow her. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed! Mine burst her stays and fell over in the crazy rain storms last year. This year, I am training her on arches across the top of my fence in hopes that her healthy foliage will block the horrid west sun during the hot summer days long after her blooms have passed. Her foliage is a beautiful color and shape. Carol

Capitaine John Ingram beginning to open his mossy buds! I think his color almost rivals my darling Tuscany Superb. That’s Paul Barden’s golden Hybrid Musk Jeri Jennings climbing a tuteur in the background.

The bed is actually somewhat shady, and CJI still grows and blooms beautifully. His roommates are a mock orange, an elderberry, hydrangeas, lemon balm, Jeri Jennings and the Gallica rose Gloire de France.

@portlandmysteryrose yes! You certainly did persuade me. And then this winter I decided "well, since I'm collecting some albas now, I'd better buy Blush Hip while it's on sale!" Lol. So I have a baby band of that newly planted, as well.

Wow what a lovely deep purple and red blend on your CJI, and on your stunning SdDJ on the other thead 😍

Ps did you get my pm

Ha, ha! You are so my kindred spirit, Magpie! An Alba on sale…. Yes! I’m glad you are enjoying my dark, mysterious roses on this and other threads! I am a sucker for those deep shades. I just saw your DM…..

I also got Marianne (gallica), Forest Ranch Pom Pom (found rose, HP), Champagne Arches (found rose), and Great Western (bourbon). 😅 And now I'm raising 3 baby roses from seed. I can't help myself lol.

Erasmus, I 100% get it. I used to remember all kinds of life’s details like every characteristic of every rose I’ve ever grown, but now I forget why I walked into a room 5 minutes ago! Palatine says Rose des Peintres is very fragrant, so I was curious what your nose thought of it’s scent. It sure is a lovely thing! I am running out of room on my postage stamp but always looking at roses in case I can persuade a friend or acquaintance to grow them. Some, like Wm Lobb, reside in large nursery pots for a few years. I grow and enjoy them as they mature from small bands, and then when they outgrow their stay, I pass them along. I have, much to my own surprise, grown a yellow Lady Banks in a big pot for 20 years!

I am reading "Word from Wormingford" by Ronald Blythe--and today came across this passage describing the summer roses in bloom in the author's rural Suffolk parish. It was written in the mid-90s. I guess I could have posted this in several other threads, but decided to post here:

    A voice says, 'Cry!'

    'What shall I cry?'

    'All flesh is grass.'

A tolerable image of transience. The washing bleaches on the lawn, the gooseberries are being gathered with the blackbirds looking on, thousands of roses perfume the slight wind. Dark William Lob, delicate Celestine, rich Charles de Mille, susceptible Leda, modest John Clare, the latest to arrive in the garden. We have staggered home from yet one more flower festival at Mount Bures. Few in this high village have much notion of 'arrangement' in today's semi-professional terms and so we see something absolutely different, and flawless of its kind.

William Lobb, first year grafted from DA. I wasn't expecting any blooms until next year so what a pleasant surprise! The color variation is even more stunning in person. Not sure if this is normal or not but I like it a lot.
