Dining room help

last year
last modified: last year

Hello,

I added new window treatments and lighting to my dining room along with a new table. New chairs are on the list but will be similar style.

I'm trying to accessories the room to give it more life and blend with my kitchen. This space is an interesting shape and not sure if a rug will fit. Do to the length of the table and the distance to pull out a chair.

I don't think you need much in the way of accessories. I'd go with a flat-weave rectangular rug that's maybe a foot wider on all sides than your table.

A rug will make a world of difference in defining the space and adding texture. Size it based on the table not on the room. Lovely space. Soothing colors but not a snoozer. Hard to do.

I’d consider a round rug. I wasn’t able to get a mock-up. This second photo is from rugs-direct.com.

You need around 3' all around the table to get the correct size rug, in order to have room for your diners to comfortably pull out chairs. It doesn't look as if there is enough space; your photos may be off. Measurements of the table and the dining area would help determine the size and shape of the rug.

New throw pillows and window treatments for both the living and dining area would make a big difference.

@elcieg that's exactly the issue with the rug there's not enough space for the chairs to move in an out and the sizes I do find spill over into the living room space. I can't adjust the window treatments or the dining room they brand new.

I don't want you to change the blinds; I mean for you to add to them. Something like this:

Do single panels for the color and interest. No need to move them.

Definitely single panels on the windows

I agree that drapery panels are needed. They add texture, warmth, and interest. i think of blinds as being functional but should not stand alone.

Yes, you just can't put up white blinds and call it a day. If you'd used roman shades with a pattern maybe... but now you'll need curtains. Good news is it is going to look great.

Hang two small pieces of framed art here with wood frames.

Room and Board has some nice woven plate/bowls that look fairly modern. I'd remove the table runner and put a woven piece in the middle of the table.

Your new blinds are perfect without drapes. Have you ordered your new chairs? Can you post a pic of them? Do they have any texture?

No, it looks like you just moved in the house and you have sheets on the windows! You need contrast!

@kendrah chairs don't have texture the ones we are looking at. Also thank you for the insight that's exactly what I was needing that little corner needed something I'm thinking a plant stand to bring in texture and color would be fun too!

For a rug, you might consider something like FLOR carpet tiles... I have used them to make a runner in my hallway and so far so good! I picked a pattern that would help any lines where the tiles join together virtually disappear. They have so many colors, patterns, styles- I'm sure you could find something to work in your space... best of all, you can cut them yourself to fit your irregularly sized space! I'm considering putting more in my dining room where I have a built in corner china cabinet and a regular rectangular rug would need to be cut to fit anyway.

I don't know your style other than what I can see in the few pictures of your space you've shared ... but some of these might look good...

IMHO, a rug under an eating table is so messy. much easier to keep that floor swept/vacuumed than a rug or carpet. Can you bring some color in another way, like perhaps in/on the runner (small vases of colorful flowers) and wall art?

@Paul F nailed it. All you need is a horse.

I wonder about a vinyl floor mat from Hudson & Vine instead of a rug? It doesn’t help with texture but helps with color -
