Designing a Room

I recently posted about decorating my toddlers room but the post feels like it got a bit off track so I’m starting over and trying to be more clear on what I need help with. I’d like to design a room from scratch (open to buying all new pieces) with the following color scheme and around the jeep photo as this is what my son likes. I am unsure what color bedding, rug, nightstands, curtains, etc. to put together. I am also unsure where to place furniture. He has a queen bed and we are looking at getting a dresser as shown. I am including some collages I’ve put together but they just seem to be lacking something fun! I definitely want a quiet cozy corner, which is where I want to put the bookshelf and mountians on the wall. Please help me decorate his room to be fun and last him a while. He is 4!

What you put together looks nice, but also doesnt look like a toddlers room. Perhaps a print or brighter color on the comforter and curtains?

The number of throw pillows makes i look adult and fussy.

    Whats the childs favote color?

Posting again will not get you any more help. Now you have 2 posts to go to for answers. You have been told to make this more kid style not your style .No child will make a bed with fancy pillows to look good Get his input not a bunch of starngers . The room will change constantly as he ages that is a fact.

@patricia these are the colors HE choose and a picture HE likes. I am trying to pull the whole room together around things that HE likes. Your answer isnt helpful. ”Make it more kid style” doesnt help me pick out items or a layout that works. The same as people questioning my bed size choice on the other thread isnt helpful. Do you have any suggestions around layout or how to pull the room together?

It looks like the only good wall for the bed is at the top of the plan, with the head on the same wall as the door. and I would place it so there is room to walk around the bed to straighten it up. I think if you try to put it in the corner too much, it will be inconvenient to make.

I would balance between leaving some floor space for him to play in and being able to get to the left side to make it easily.

Also at 4 years old the kid is no longer a toddler!

Go with the first one, but find slightly more interesting bedding.

Stay away from gray. That trend lasted 15 years and is way overdone.

Maybe add a little orange to make it a little brighter?

I love the striped curtains and bookshelf mural in your idea collage.

If you’re going with tab top drapes, keep in mind that they do not pull closed very easily. Theyre often used in decor as slde panels combined with a shade for privacy and light control.

@chispa omg you’re right, not a toddler anymore *cue the tears* That is why I am trying to give him a big boy room but keep it fun!!

HE already thinks it is "fun"! He chose the picture! It is his room, not yours, and you will change it at least three more times.

    No. Matter. What.

over the bed.....take up 48 inches! in width

    there's your "Mountains" ( Wayfair )

Over a COMFY chair in the corner the beep, bigger please 24 x 30!!

But you buy it @"Minted" and larger than the Pottery Barn, where I'm thinking you found it.

    On the closet side?

    24 x 24 magnet board.

Why am I filling the walls?

Because you need NOT paint mountains. Children's art is always too darn small to be useful.

Get a couple BIG floor pillows 26 x 26. Kids love the floor ( Fine Art America)

Get a toss for his bed!

find a chair for the corner!

Paint the walls...... get the bedding and done!!

I think some of the confusion is because there are two threads about this. In the other thread, the OP referred to her child as a toddler and didn't give his age until further down the thread.

Generally, a child is considered a toddler when they begin walking (around age 1) until 3 years old. Age four would be regarded as pre-school. There is a huge maturity difference between a 1-year-old and a 4-year-old.

    The point is one:

She wants a blend between the no such thing as "forever" at four, and her other post as "toddler.

My point? don't wring a hand - it will change, make his "fun" more fun...! and it will last until seven or eight years for bedding/walls

    It's a jeep thing: ) until it ISN'T!!!

    And this is the room

Add any comfy chair you like!

( Night stands ( green or other ) are an easier paint job up the road than a wood dresser: )

It needs no curtains...... Add a natural woven shade, cordless and a room dark lining if need be

( By the time the op gets moving? He might be SIX LOL

FWIW, I work with school-age kids and teach art/crafts to them.

One thing I do know very well about children is that the things they are obsessed with today will eventually be forgotten - sometimes in just a few weeks.

When my son was in pre-K, he brought home easel paintings on very large paper, so I hung them all around his small room - basically filling the walls - it was very cheerful. I used poster frames for most of them. If your kid likes making pictures and other art projects, a bulletin board or similar for displaying things would be a good idea and takes care of wall decor.

Some cute and relatively easy ideas that aren't very expensive and could be used for posters & photos too:

And bookshelves work better than book racks, since they can be used for more than just books, and make it easier to put things away too. Small kids are not too good at putting books back neatly on racks, IMPE.

Anything tall needs to anchored to the wall to prevent tipping, of course.

    Hope this helps...

I don't know how much extra room you have but from a practical standpoint a room with a queen sized bed can be used as a guest room if necessary, whereas a room with a twin, not so much.

Although the kids rooms in the house I grew up in were pretty much furnished how my parents wanted and didn't have anything in them too juvenile, we all had a large bulletin board where we could put up whatever we wanted.

(When I was in first grade we moved, and my new bedroom was all Ethan Allen Custom Room Plan in Heirloom Nutmeg and berber carpet. Some adults had rooms like that. It was fine. Actually when my dad sold the house 45 years later, the buyers asked Specifically for that furniture, because they had never seen furniture that fit together as modules like that before)

Defintely makes a diference that he’s four - not a toddler! They grow up fast - he will be a teenager before you know it! 😢

Jan has provided a great layout + coordinating art for the Jeep photo that he likes. I would buy a nice duvet insert - makes it easy for kids to make beds (when he’s a little older) + you can change the cover when it‘s time to update is room.

I think the colors are going to be cute!

You are way over thinking this. All of your colors in each picture look nice together. Nothing is wrong. You need to make sure there are 1.) books within reach 2.) a bedsidelight for reading 3.) an uncomplicated bed to make - just a duvet to pull up - no extra throw pillows 4.) that he likes it and has invested in picking out a few things. Then you are done!

It is true that folks with nine kids don't worry as much. Fed and clean seems adequate?! When there is one child?? All bets are off lol

I don't think there is anything wrong with having a kid's room that adults don't mind being in.

I saw the apartment of a designer and her young son's room was kind of adult and skewed a little feminine (except that I don't like using this term, a formal room is often called "feminine" unless it's all dark wood and leather) , except for his toys and such. And she said (of course from the point of view of a designer with lots of resources who lived in Gramercy Park): "Right now I will be spending a lot of time in this room myself, and I will be for a few years, reading to him at night, playing with him during the day. So right now this room is decorated for Me, a room I like to be in, because he doesn't care yet. When he does, we'll do something else.
