Toddler Bedroom Decor Help

last year
last modified: last year

I need some help pulling this toddler boys room together. First picture is what I thought would work but didn't, 2nd/3rd are another view and then what I’m envisioning. I think I need help with curtains and rug?? Keep bedding or return? Color on the wall is stonington gray but I am leaning toward painting it all white and adding the green mountains in a reading nook corner. I love the bedding but want to make the room grown up, but not too grown up and keep it fun with pieces that will grow with him. Open to changing anything! Room dimensions/floorplan added below.

Very sophisticated for a toddler. I would put the bed on the solid wall. Open the curtains and put shades on the windows for everyday use. Hang the art you've chosen and paint the tree on the walls in the corner between the 2 windows. Too much bedding for a toddler, put the throw on a shelf so he can pull it out when he wants it. 1 night stand should be enough with a taller lamp for when you read to him at bedtime.

I think the room looks nice decor wise for a toddler and maybe just add art and a creative play area. A dresser and bed are good investments though and are easily adaptable to any decor changes down the road.

It’s a bit grown up for him, simpler bedding and no lamp next to the bed, or even within reach. I love your design inspiration, and think you can just let him grow into the room by putting a few things away for now. It’s not too early for him to help “make” the bed, and too many pillows and coverings will complicate this. I am not sure where you are in parenthood, but keeping chores simple and easy to accomplish will help them become habits. You may be thinking that “my children” will always keep a neat room; revisit this thread in 10 years when you are running late for school or an activity and can’t find something he needs because things are not where they are supposed to be…😆. What’s that saying? The road to hell is paved with good intentions.🙂

I agree with you about painting, the gray is a little dreary for a child, but I would be tempted to use the green from the art you're showing. Look for striped curtains. Just white and green or white and gray, nothing too busy. The ones you have aren't that bad. Maybe if the bed wasn't right in front of them they would be OK. Young children usually like character bedding. Maybe just sheets? Or save what you have for when he's older. It looks more appropriate for an older child - like teen or close to it.

I like the things you picked out, even the first curtains. But I agree that the bedding isn't exactly fun or toddler-friendly. Too many layers, not very cheery. All I can think of is trying to clean all that stuff after a late-night accident or tummy troubles.

These prints could work until 2nd grade or so.

I actually think it’s lovely as is. I would move where the bed is in the room and leave the rest

Thank you all! For those that said to move the bed to the solid wall, two things:

    1. Where would you put the long dresser? The only place is in front of the curtains, correct?

    2. Would you center the bed with nightstands on each side, or push it aganist the wall?

Great points about changing sheets and him being able to make his own bed. i love the layered look, but maybe not so practical. I am open to changing the bedding, but a but lost on where to go. I posted a few solid options I came up with. I dont want the room to be TOO busy. For context, the rest of the home is a modern boho decor. Thank you!!

@ShadyWillowFarm I am curious why you suggest no lamp? We’ve always had one next to his bed that we turn on and off after reading books at night. Seems to work fine.

@Maureen We have a teepee! I’ll take a picture of that corner when I get home.

What does the small window look like?

I like the curtains! But I would use them more like stationary panels and put a woven wood shade underneath with a blackout liner.

These aren't the right colors, of course--just an example of how it should be installed. I'd go with a natural woven wood. Will give the room some nice texture, too.

Add cute nightstands and you're set!

    How old is your son?

A question. Why a double bed in a toddler’s room? Just asking. A twin bed would give far more floor space for play. A trundle twin would provide space for a sleepover too. I like your theme and colorway. The size of the bed speaks to an older occupant. But then…I am not current on appropriate beds for children.

I disagree with the people saying it’s not a toddler room. Kids are toddlers for a short time. Depending on how your house is set up your kid may basically sleep in their room and that’s it. We went with twin beds as our rooms are small but I admit a double would have been much cozier for cuddles and what not. If you haven’t chosen any of the pieces yet then of course you have a blank slate but since you do appear to have a bed and curtains and a bedspread why change it? Let your child choose easily changed things.

My question has to do with age - will he fall out of that bed??!?!

I just had two linen duvet covers made for my grandson - a melange blue + a green one that’s a similar color to the second photo in your recent post

. My daughter has a convertible crib that turns into a toddler bed (and later into a full sized bed) that she’s using. It’s lower to the floor + has a partial railing = no rolling out of bed. She has a few different cute sheet sets that she can use with either of the duvet covers. Easy to make his bed because there isn’t a top sheet.

His room actually has similar colors to what you’ve put together!

The toddler sized bed provides plenty of space for him to use his room for other activities (he has a book area + his toy chest + a teepee).

To clear some things up, my son is 4 and has been in this bed for at least 2 years. It is a queen because that is what we had (was our guest mattress) and because I end up in there some nights. Its a very low bed but he doesn’t fall out anyway. The room is huge as it is our old primary room and he still has lots of room to play.

The bed, dresser, nightstand, bookshelf and GRAY curtains are what we’ve had for a while. We just remodeled our whole house and I’m trying to upgrade his room because we’ve redecorated everything else and he’s very excited for his turn. The triangle curtains and the green bedding have not been used and can be returned. So really, its a pretty blank slate and I just dont know what to do!

These are the colors he likes and that I’m trying to incoporate. And the picture he loves that I’d like the whole room coordinated around.

Knowing what you already have I wouldn’t change those things. If the bedding and curtains can be easily changed then do that.
We have three kids and they each chose their curtains, bedding and art on walls. We chose carpet and paint which is grey owl for the entire house. One of my kids has plain white bedding and buys throws and pillows to change it up, one has this hilarious old person flower bedding but they love it, one has a Minecraft bedding set. It’s super easy to change these all though.

I asked before but didn’t see an answer. Would it be possible for the dresser to go on the wall with the smaller window? Or even in the closet?

Hi, @westcoast I did post a picture above of the smaller window. There would likely not be room to put a dresser on that wall. Not sure I want to go to the closet each time for clothes but I will consider it!

Go to the OTHER thread? This is the problem with two threads, same room.
