More First Flowers Open

I had a few more first blooms to open yesterday and today. I'm surprised how different the seedlings look from last year. The color is much darker this year since we've had regular rain.

Stones Palace Rejoice started blooming yesterday. Bud count is down as it is on most of the earlies, probably related to the late March freezes and last year's drought. The scapes are about the right height.

Seedling X Razor Sharp #1 - The color is much darker this time and it looks like a self, while last years version had lighter red purple petals and a darker blue purple eye. The teeth on the edge are a combo of cream white and gold. It's an inch or two taller this year, but still on the short side.

Gypsy Cats kid X Ripsaw #1 is much taller than previous two years (34 inches) and has better bud count (13-15) than years past. The color is much more saturated this time and the bloom is larger (7.5 inches).

White Tooth X Skater #2 - This one did not bloom at all last year. It's shorter this year than it was back in 2022 but it has a larger bloom. I don't know if its short scapes are weather related or grub related.

Your posted Razor Sharp seedlings have such rich color. I like the color on the White Tooth seedling. Oh my how are you going to decide on your ”suitcase” seedlings when you move?

Kate - I'm going to have to let more seedlings go than I would like. But most of them don't have great bud counts anyway. All three of the seedlings today are evergreens, and evergreens without great plant habits are the least likely to make the suitcase.

Stones Palace Rejoice is very pretty and the seedlings look great! I have always really liked the White tooth seedlings, I hate to think of your having to leave so many of your "babies.". We will miss some of them especially like the bright one from Francis Busby. You will keep posting won't you? We would miss you terribly>

Kay - The Francis Busby seedling will be moving with me because it's semi-evergreen and does have good plant habits. I'll still be posting photos this year of seedlings, but I probably won't have as much time to post daily pics of registered daylilies. Next year I will post what I have.

Sherry - Thanks to last winter's below zero temps here, I have a good idea of which seedlings and which registered daylilies absolutely should not go. Those that still have anemic-looking foliage and short scapes this year won't make the cut.
