Fireplace update

last year

Would you paint the stone? or just lighten the mantle (currently sanding it so front is light colored wood) and paint the fireplace hearth? husband feels its too dated and wants to update

Not a fan of painting that type of stone. It's not real, so you could easily remove it and have a blank slate to do whatever your heart desires.

Please post pictures of the room so we can see the layout and furnishings so others can offer more advice.

    What material is your hearth?

I would either remove the stone or leave it alone. Painting or whitewashing that would be a nightmare because it's not a smooth, grouted surface. Stain the mantel to blend in with the stone or match the floors.

    Darken the wood mantle

I'm guessing they were trying to get the hearth to blend into the floor. May once there are accessories installed the hearth material will be less of an issue.

What are you going to do with the gray area rug that seems so out of place with the finishes in the room?

I admit I'm not crazy about the shades on the windows, The color and texture draws too much attention to them. I'd consider just drapery panels if privacy isn't an issue.

The furniture is not changing. just purchased and it blends better in person. agree on changing blinds- it was previous owners and we are mid construction on other parts of rhe home wirh 2 young kids.

hearth is a stone of some sort

Leave the stone, but in the room there are too many contrasting textures all working against each other, in my opinion. The eye doesn’t know what to look at. The carpet, the blinds, the light filtering through the blinds, the sofa and the stone. Love the darker mantle as suggested. It’s up to you as to which of the contrasting elements you might be willing to change.

I would change above the mantel to drywall that is really not ideal with those windows at all.Even worse with the rattan blinds that suit nothing. Get some soalr shades for the windows they will control the heat and the UV but allow you to keep the view . IMO the furniture i can see looks very sleek and modern so the texture on the bottom of the FP works and IMO an even lighter mantel to match the floors could work. Once drywall is done a large piece of art can then be hung that is all you need no mantel decor .Not sure how those checkered chairs fit into the whole scheme.

OK.............so stain the mantle black to go with the furniture.

Hang charcoal gray drapery panels at the windows

I would go with art over the mantle.
