need help with living room

last year

How big area rug would go in my dinning room and what color. Was thinking something like in the blueprint, but keep in mind the couch supersedes the other wall already by like 4 inches. And planing to put a tv and stand on the opposite wall.

Any recommendations in general would be much appreciated.Thank you

It will help to choose a rug if you have art you plan to use, or an inspiration photo for a color palette. Here’s another of the photos BeverlyFLADeziner posted with an ivory rug.

How many people use the room daily and how many guests do you want to accommodate? Is the couch reversible? Is the couch a keeper or are you willing to replace it?

  • last year

Around 2 on daily and would like to accommodate 4-6

    Just got the couch

Was thinking of getting this table and chair

I like the warm color of the seat cushion and the dark wood goes nicely with your floor. I’d think about the color palette you plan to have before making a decision.

Suggesting that you get a table that can be expanded to fit up to eight people. One that leaves can be inserted to expand it. We understand about the couch. Thanks for getting back to us about how many people use the room. Can they chase be converted to the opposite side on your couch? Again, thanks for getting back to us. That’s very helpful.

  • last year

The couch can’t be converted it’s fixed on that side.

What do you think about this ? Is it a bad idea to put the round dining table in front of the kitchen on one side and entrance on the other like that ?

    Hello Jon,

We are going to post pictures of the rendition that will present our suggestions for your consideration. It is true; the only place for your couch is on the wall that you have it. Yes, it is best that you put the table close to the kitchen opening as you yourself suggested. You have done well with what you have.

    • Your little apartment is dark, lacking light and windows so we suggest that you add mirrors to act as windows and floor lamps to add light into your rooms. You will be able to see what we are suggesting in the pictures.

Here are some pictures of the corner window with a mirror to act as a mock window with curtains to balance out the corner that will be your desk/home office. We suggest that you position your desk facing out instead of facing the wall. Also your desk chair facing out with it's back to the corner as seen in the rendition. Why, because you will have the natural light over your shoulder, be able to see the TV and have a more open feeling instead of being closed in when facing the walls.

Here are some pictures of the rendition with suggestions for your consideration.

These are some long shots of the living and dining areas. Please know that the colors and styles are not being suggested.

    In this you will see:

    • 1. One round, expandable 3 to 4 foot table. Located in front of the kitchen door as you yourself suggested. It is the best location for the table.
    • 2. One buffet table with drawers and storage with art over it. Folks have offer some beautiful art suggestions for you.
    • 3. Three floor lamps. Two on the back wall . As suggested by someone else, you will need to pull the couch out away from the wall to add the floor lamp.
    • 4. A large window like mirror to be a mock window and reflect both natural and ambient light into the room. With an entry table with a drawer under the mirror.
    • 5. One small round side table on the right side of the couch.
    • 6. One 55" TV with a TV with an electric fireplace under it.
    • 7. One nested coffee table that can be separated and used as place settings for beverages for guests.
    • 8. One area rug.
    • 9. One large piece of art over the couch.

Some arial views of the dining/living room. Hope this helps. Best wishes in your new home.

I love the idea of placing a mirror perpendicular to the window to increase the light. The dining set will be the focal point when you enter, so it would be great to have an interesting light fixture over the table, such as this one posted by BeverlyFLADeziner. Do you have an existing source of electricity there?

Here is are a couple of examples of mirrors that can be used as a mock windows.

This is a Bayliff Metal Wall mirror sold on Wayfair.

Here is another mirror that can go in the corner (or one like it) as a mock sister window behind your desk. It is a Auryana metal flat wall mirror. It is about 52" tall and 2' wide. You may need two of them side by side to match your windows. Just a suggestion. There are many other mirrors to choose from. Hope this adds some fun for you and hope it helps. Best wishes. MAE

Thank you so much, really appreciate. Very impressive work. But do you think it’s ok to put a table in between the entrance way and entrance into the kitchen. Won’t be like creating an obstacle?

Some people were telling me in the past try to avoid it

I understand but it is the best location for it. Just keep it small and extendable, about 3 to 4' when closed. You will be able to walk around it just fine. The apartment is too small to put it anywhere else and have a desk. So, yes it is ok.

  • last year

Ok cool. I found a round one that is 42 circumference and drops to a 42 x 26 when leafs are dropped

  • last year

What size is the dimensions of the white table in your rendition?

  • PRO

3' 6" . Not a drop leaf table but a table that you can add leafs/sections to it to expand the seating capacity.

  • last year

Can you please share a link to an example table

I have a layout idea to consider but I need more measurements. What is length and depth of sectional? What is measurement from long wall in living room to 92” wall. What is width of space from 92” wall across ni entry to far wall. What is length of floor from no window wall in living room to the other wall/kitchen entry. Then I can test out. Here’s concept. No have no entry so you can “create” entry drop zone and desk area behind sectional and move TV to opposite wall with low units with extra storage and TV Above with vases or objects and the demilune (half round) table on no window wall with mirror above it. Coffee table and floor lamp with a dining drop leaf or expanding table on end of sectional. Adds storage and maximizes space use. I can do a scale layout when you can post the measurements I need for that. 🙂

  • last year

    Couch : 108 in x 38 in
Big wall to 92in wall : 11 feet

Wall with window to entry way : 19 feet

Finally got sone quiet time to do this scale drawing for you. Still not sure on measurements but from what you posted and photos this is close. Think of it as “concept”. I thought the space could’ve use a bit of defined “entry” so that’s why I switched sofa/sectional to other wall. That gives Faux wall with back of sectional and reduces visual size of sectional in the space. Then I created further division with a drop zone cabinet or table beside a desk surface to create a little “work” nook. At end of the sectional I put a drop leaf table to be able to seat 2-6 people with simple pull up leafs. I added chairs to be used at the table when needed. The “view” when you enter now will have the TV wall with art and accessories act as a focal point. I put a “faux window mirror” over a half round table. Might fit a pouff for extra seating under that table. I put a glass top coffee table 36” in hex shape for easy walking around. A floor lamp in one corner and a tall plant in other corner. A lamp on the Drop zone cabinet for additional ambient lighting. Now I will put together sone sample pieces for you to visualize this better. Bbl

Here are some ideas. You can pick styling and metal finishes and sizing that fits your needs. And works in the above concept. I would also add cool ceiling light fixture that suits styling you choose. 😊

Once you decide on overall plan, you can add pieces as budget allows. Everything I picked I tried to find budget friendly items.

To better understand the concept from Flo Mangan, I placed it next to one of your previous postings. The pink blobs represent the little drop zone cabinet next to the desk in her concept plan. It seems to be crowded into the narrow entry. Am I missing something here?

  • PRO

Here is article that might be helpful. ffpalms seems to have better measurements of the entry than I saw? Obviously as I mentioned, all measurements need to be verified. Then furniture can be adjusted as needed.

  • PRO

I suggest you get some “furniture sliders for smooth floors” and try moving your sectional to opposite wall. This will be relatively easy to do and we can get a much better feel for the whole space. Then our suggestions will be more accurate for the place. 🙂

These sliders come in various sizes to fit the legs on your furniture. Makes moving furniture a breeze. One person can do most items. I am short, but I have used these for years for my design work and “staging” work. Great things to keep on hand.

I put together this little sketch to help you “see” what I see for this space. I chose a kind of modern style but you can go in the direction you choose. Just lean into that style with each selection.

I think a 7’ wide x 9’ long rug would work well. A standard 8 x 10 would work too. Just get sofa front legs onto the rug.

    Thank you very much
