I need to see more to have a clue as to what these gates are for. Please post the pic in jpeg so we can at least enlarge it. 4" spacing IMO will look even worse than the chain link by itself. I need context please .

I doubt they will support the extra weight. You would attach a frame of some sort screwed to the galvanized pipe then attach your vertical cedar to that but that assembly will weigh significantly more than the chain link.

Thanks for including an enlargable pic in your second post, it shows your gates well. You can use rigid conduit or pipe straps to attach slats to the pipe after you have removed the chainlink. Make sure you get galvanized ones. Probably 2" since most metal fence pipe and post is 2". This is what they look like.

Be aware that the wood might weigh as much or more than the chain link you are removing. You might need to put wheels on your gate ends to cope with that.

This was the inspiration. It was a fence panel at a sidewalk area in Niagara Falls.
