Furnace takes up 44” across and 39 deep. Water heater takes up 36” in back corner adjacent to furnace.usable space is apx 8x10 ft. Opening is 36”. I don’t have a door there.

Get yourself a LED fold out light bulb. Those things are bright, very bright. I got big three fold downs in the high sockets in the barn, but they also make smaller ones and some have 4-5 fold downs. I'm not sure if the smaller ones would fold open nice on a two socket setup. You might need to change that out for a one socket if you decide to use the fold down bulbs.

You could replace the one little white cabinet with a much larger lower cabinet setup. If you do a shelf/cabinet a little higher than the hang bar, and/or the bar a little lower, you could have a shelf/cabinets and bar running most of the upper length of the pegboard wall. Do you actually iron there, or is the ironing board just stored there? If you actually iron there, you could put in a murphy ironing board. If you like to use the little square mirrors, you could use a larger mirror as a cabinet front to the ironing board.

A fairly cheap and easy quick you can do on the floor is to get a bright outdoor rug. They can be pretty good sized and it's the season to find them in abundance. The only painting I would recommend for a basement would be a drylock or other masonry waterproofing meant for basements.

What is your budget?

You could create a lovely space that makes doing laundry a pleasure and not a chore.

You might need to define the spaces and create some walls and storage so that you have as space that feels happy.

Apple, thank you for these Ideas. You're right about too much stuff. I'm going to the local Habitat store and see if they have a cabinet with several doors where I can place my "stuff" out of site, that is after I dump some of it. I was concerned about painting the ceiling since there's wires and pipes. Should I be? I see a lot of those in Pinterest and like the look but what if someone needs to find the electrical versus the water pipes? Also I'd have to spray paint it but I guess I could rent a sprayer or find someone to do it for cheap. I have a handyman who might do it. It's so dark down there. We have an auto light that comes on with motion. I like the idea for the fold down LED but would like something else. My budget is $250. We're getting anew roof next week and my budget is running low for other stuff plus I like working on projects like this.

Are there any electrical outlets other than for the HVAC and washer/dryer? A plug-in LED strip light or swagged light would be options for $30 or less. Also, if you don't have 100-watt equivalent LED bulbs in the 2-bulb fixture, try putting two in. They run about $15 for a 2-pack at big box stores.

I'd try spray paint on a 5" hand-sized area of the HVAC ductwork in an unobtrusive spot to see if paint sticks or peels.

Thank you to everyone that commented. I feel so cleansed getting rid of stuff. Still need to get the used cabinet/furniture to fold on and hold xtra stuff. I put more things out today those for garbage day tomorrow. Those led 3 light units don’t work with my motion sensor and it only goes off partly. when I leave the room. It was inexpensive so.ill keep looking.

That's a dramatic change. Decluttering worked very well.

Lots of people fold laundry on top of their washers and dryers. One heap on the dryer being made into folded stuff on the washer. IME, it takes about 7 minutes to fold an ordinary load of wash.
