Which is most viable is a matter of debate so I'll defer that conversation to another day. You can make bins less hospitable for BSF by feeding less,adding bedding and having bin dryer. Frankly I think you should embrace it as a learning experience since there is no "bad outcome" from doing it less than perfect. If you have room I suggest starting a secound bin with worms harvested from this bin. Cover #2 with screen to exclude flies then draw your own conclusions when materials are used.

Here's something I hope makes your hobby more rewarding. 75% of long time composters and gardeners do it for therapy and experimentation is a part of that therapy. When you read unusual things people do,that doesn't mean you should do the same or if you do it you will be more successful.
