Kitchen Layout Help

last modified: 2 years ago

Hi everyone,

Currently in the process of designing my kitchen. We are trying to have the sink, dishwasher and cooktop all on one side. There is a bay window behind the peninsula, so can't extend anything out much further. We are in a predicament of sink placement:

1. Put sink right next to dishwasher, leaving 24 inches of countertop space between the cooktop, but leaves a clean looking peninsula

2. Put sink in the corner, leaving more countertop space between to the cooktop.

Your suggestions are greatly appreciated!

I hate a corner sink and don't love having to turn all the way around to load the dishes from the sink into the dishwasher. Likewise, if they are side by side, you are trapped in a very small space when loading the dishwasher.

Add your floor plan with the exact measurements and labels of your doors, windows, and other spacial limitations. I bet you will get lots of replies here from folks who will cook up layout ideas that are more functional than what you have going on here.

Neither plan is good. Label where door openings go, form entry points like garage or mud, to what rooms and show the existing kitchen .

Would also be good to show the kitchen in relationship to the rest of your home, so if you have the whole living floor, add it please.

    Both plans are........nope.

Good for you, coming to Houzz for advice and suggestions. You already know from thinking about this that the range and the sink are too close. Corner sinks are dreadful. No one has ever said "I love my corner sink" and really meant it. For the size of kitchen you have is a 36 range too big? But before you we go into that, as everyone loves a big range. Let's ask these questions..

Can you borrow space from other rooms?

    Can you move water?

What is behind the peninsula? I assume a family room or some place you can see into from the kitchen.

What is behind this space to the south of your image?

    Is this another room?

In a few hours others will be awake and will help you come up with a fantastic new plan! Looking forward to all the incredible ideas for making things work in a small space.

If this were mine id make a U shape on the 150 in wall …stove and hood against the 150 in wall and pick whichever short side forsink and dishwasher. place fridge on lower wall where the two 36 in things are. On the 74 inches over to the right maybe 12 in deep pantry storage / only if needed. not knowing much about all your doorways but assume they must remain…..bulk up and use 150 in wall better…..U shape…

You are halfway there. Now just add to your drawing which are doors or windows and where the doors lead to. If you can't figure out how to add text to your drawing, just make a simple sketch and label them. We'll get too confused if you just describe them in the comments.

I do love my corner sink. It was the only way the dishwasher, sink, and stove were going to fit in the same counter run. Before we remodelled, the sink and the cooktop were on opposite sides of the kitchen, about ten feet apart with a traffic zone between them.

    Two points:

    1. move the dishwasher to the penisula so it isn't between the sink and the stove
    2. find someone who knows how to do a corner sink. One of the reasons people here are so down on them is they've rarely seen one done properly.

What is the depth of the bay window? Why have the seating on the peninsula with everyone’s back to the view?
