Reddish canes

I've compared it to all the other pink flowered native and exotic Rosa species occuring in New York and Rosa rugosa is the best match.

Possibly s hybrid, but definitely heavy on the rugosa blood. All you have to do is look at the *rugose* leaves, the awkward branching, and the typical rugosa thorniness.

Rosa rugosa cultivars have offspring not true to type.

True Jay. I wasn't implying that every rugosa hybrid has those traits, but anything exhibiting those traits has to have rugosa genes.

Your hybrid hypothesis is plausable. I was just adding another possibility. Are there any characters that indicate another species?

Nobody thinks it could be rosa Arkansasa? The reddish canes aren’t very typical of rugosas, are they? I do have a lot of Therese burnet rose, which have the reddish canes. The bees love to visit them as well as the rugosa rose frau dagmar hatrup, which this rose appeared beneath. The other seedlings I grew from this area all had the thicker glossier foliage more like the parent. I gave away most of them because I grew impatient waiting for them to flower butI kept this one because it seemed different.

Much more likely to be a rugosa seedling than it is a randomly deposited seed from a species not native to the area. Certainly has plenty of rugosa characteristics.
