Need ideas for back wall

last year
last modified: last year

I am struggling with the back wall of my family room. its a long narrow room which makes things more difficult. The couch needs to stay where it is. I am open to replacing the existing brown chair as is quite old. I have been looking for art work for the wall but hard as there is no furniture underneath to anchor it.

One large piece of art that is wider than it is tall.

I agree with art. I would remove the tree. I would move the floor lamp over to the end of the sofa where the short one is now. Move the short one to another room. You don't want too many small pieces in the room.

It is also the perfect spot for a tall piece of furniture, that is not too narrow. Bookcases would work, but a beautiful vintage breakfront or similar.

Doesn’t have to be stodgy, could be a fun color or even an armoire this is a little too large:

Art hung to one side, maybe two pieces stacked.

I agree that it is the perfect place for a large cabinet or bookshelf.

Nice room. I like what you've done.

I'd do a narrow black console w/art and decor. something like this

also gave you some better pillows.

I would add a wide console/cabinet that is not too deep or high, with a big piece of artwork on the wall above it.

I think large square art of a sort that appeals to you, although I lean abstract at scale.

    Actually

the cabinet goes well with several other pieces in the room that arent visible.

Art does not need to be "anchored" by furniture.

Either one large piece or a gallery wall.

I agree. I think, since there is already a console type piece, that adding another one would be a mistake. One, too many.

The room doesn't need another console and I would take that floor lamp put it where the plant is move the plant either beside the chair or in the floor lamp corner and I would take the little lamp that's by the couch where currently the plant is at I would put it on the chest that's on the other side of the couch you need a lamp over there

I particularly like the suggestion from Beth H. of a photo gallery wall. I’d get a collection of frames in antique white, and fill them with black and white family photos. We have a collection of both very old and very new photos, and they always draw interest in a way that artwork never does.

A large art work doesn't need furniture to anchor it as others have said. This palette would work well in your living room. It's from Society6.com and comes in very large sizes. Artists submit their designs, which then get reproduced in wall art, pillows, and more. I often suggest the site for people who are just getting interested in hanging art on their walls. There are so many subjects, styles, palettes to choose from.

Not loving the floor lamp there. It seems odd to light up that empty corner. Put it near a seat or in another room. Move the caramel colored chair toward the right corner, angled.

Art is what you need. Go big or go home. Housegal’s samples are great.

I have been looking at something on Etsy that is different and may work for you depending on how much you like natural elements in the home. (I have things like bird nests, paper wasp nests, interesting rocks driftwood and petrified wood in my home.)

They have all different sizes and formations.

A buffet/sideboard with art above. Nothing busy, the room is busy enough as is.

Wall sculpture is another option. Lots of ideas on https://www.artfulhome.com/navigate/sculpture-wall-sculpture/page=2

These are some antique ceiling tiles that my sister found and hung on her living room wall. (Best part is they are from an old insane asylum that was torn down.)

She also has a large metal art piece in her home - a gift from her husband with the lyrics from the song they first danced to at their wedding.

Art doesn't always have to be pictures . . .
