Advice for oddly shaped fireplace

last modified: 2 years ago

Hello. I am trying to stage one of my rental property for pictures. I just carried in stuff and plunked it on fireplace. I would like to use this piece of art. Should I raise it higher and place smaller art to the side to even weight out. Should I paint the fireplace a different color? Opinions? Thank you
Editing to ad info:

Home has the furniture in it. Other picture is older of it empty.

Not sellling the home. Trying to get it ready for Airbnb pictures..

I should mention it is a very open floor plan and entire home in same Agreeable Grey. The fireplace is double sided. You see this first thing when you walk in home.

Here is another view of fireplace. This is from maybe 5 years ago when empty between tenants. That yellow wall is gone. I was just trying to show how open and akward this space is.

I love that art but not in that location. It highlights the asymmetrical chimney. I would do a wide, short piece a bit narrower than the mantle. Keep the focus below the odd chimney.

Mccarroll16 Thank you for that advice. I do have wide narrower art I will try.

Patricia Colwell Thank you! I will try the horizontal art. And I should have posted more info. I already have all the furniture in place. I simply showed older picture of the layout from few years ago to show oddness of fireplace. Again the advice was appreciated and I will try and implement it.

That sized art but turned sideways so it is horizontal. I would never stage a house with that artwork. If I were a buyer, I'd forever refer to that as the mad cow house. Not an attractive piece of art.

Kendrah , not staging it for sale. My original post was clear as mud. I apologize. Its an airbnb in Dallas,Texas suburb. And I actually like it as their are longhorns close by and the entire theme of home is Texas. I died laughing at the Mad Cow comment, certainly not the affect I was going for ..lol . but honesty is good and I am glad to see your view.

So the all who have helped me see that obviously the picture is wrong orientation etc. What else can I do to improve the fireplace? Would a slightly different color help? A bulkier mantle surround? The builder special one from the 1980s is just sad.

Ah, Dallas suburbs - now I think the cow makes more sense. Still, the wrong size.

You sound like just as much of a perfectionist as I am. But, I honestly think that once you get the right art up here the rest of the mantle is not going to make or break this Air BnB listing.

Remove mantel, add wood trim, glass doors and artwork.

Replace mantel with floating shelf and some artwork. Add Fireplace Frame Screen

If it were mine i would remove mantle, consider painting the fireplace ”Mole’s Breath” by Farrow & Ball, but difficult to tell if it would be a good fit with your colors. My fireplace is similar , more horizontal & firebox lower than yours, that that’s what I did, liked the color so much I omitted art on it.

For better or for worse the area above the fireplace was intentionally designed to be asymmetrical, so I think I would work with it rather than against it.

I would probably paint the mantle the wall color unless you can remove it or replace with with something plainer and thicker. The style of the brackets do not work with the rest.

I think the art needs to be taller and thinner and could be offset to go up the taller part of the fireplace. If you keep the mantle something shorter could be placed on the left portion.

KLaurence: I think you are right, mantle should go. I will check out the paint you recommended.

Palimpsest: Thank you for that! I just am not going at doing scale and seeing your idea visually really helped me. Appreciate it!
