What am I missing to tie everything together?

last year

Hi everyone! i have an open concept kitchen, dining and living room. Still waiting on some of my living room furniture so i cant share a picture of that.

but currently im shopping for 2 pendants to go above my island, a runner rug for the kitchen, and hardware for the cabinets. im thinking black for hardware. can you point out anything that i might be missing to really tie everything in?

still working on window treatments as well :)

would love any thoughts, advice or inspiration as im starting to hit a wall!!

thank you so much!!

I like these small gray pendants. I attempted to show the patterned roman blinds on the windows. I don’t know if the scale of the pattern is correct.

This is so cool! can you share with me how you are doing these visualizations?

On my ipad, if I hold my finger down on an image from my library it sometimes removes the background, which I can then save as a new image. I then use Adobe Fresco - one of many apps that allows you to layer images over each other.

Space looks large … kids in the family??? pulling table away from wall is good . window treatments to soften and make that area inviting . can you use anything like a storage bench or similar under window for kid things? id probably get a stain repellent rug under table….they are really good w stain care in the fibers of late. try to marry rhe gray / white w all the wood in kitchen. that is the main disconnect i see.. really cool vibe around table then kitchen is super warm. but you have a lot of ways w accesories to work it out.

Yes! We have a baby and that’s one of the reasons we pushed the table to the wall so she has lots of space to crawl around! It’s a transformer table so we can move it around or expand it as necessary when we have guests over but when it’s just the three of us we just leave it that way.

I totally agree with you about the disconnect. Just trying to find ways to incorporate the two areas. I like what ffpalms suggested about the gray pendant lights. Originally I thought I wanted white marble effect pendants that would pull in bits of black and gray but I now think I do need something gray to make the space more cohesive!

Are you planning to add a large area rug? I find in big, large spaces like you have that a rug or two really make a difference. If you want something grey, you could find a rug you love with some grey in it!

I guess no one else thinks the bright white table and chairs are misfits?

Brown cabinets and floors, black hardware, black barstools with cream colored cushions, cream colored countertops, white dining chairs with gray cushions. And consideration of gray pendant lighting. Seems all over the place to me but maybe I’m old fashioned.

The room lacks softness, like you said. Window coverings, rugs, etc.

And no need to shove the table out of the way for baby. Looks awkward. And my grandbabies’ favorite place to hang out was under my dining room table.

Agree with littlebug on colors. Stark white and grays are not a great fit with all the warm wood tones. That said, the baby-toddler years are the time for making do with furniture, both in items and arrangement. That big open space with easy-clean wood floor is perfect right now. Add a little polish with island pendants, window treatments, and a runner that have colors that connect to your living room furniture. When you are done needing that play area, that's the time to get a new table and chairs, center them in the dining space, and install a nice pendant over the table.

I think sage green color will look nice on the walls in that kitchen area or at the windows wherever you would like to put the color unless you want that wallpaper

mcarroll16 makes a great point about connecting the colors to the living room. While I do think grays, cream, and white can work with warm wood by incorporating the warm tones in artwork or accessories (as illustrated in the bedroom photo below), the scheme wouldn’t work if it doesn’t relate to the living room. Do you already have a color scheme you’d like to work with?

The room really isn’t as big as it looks. The picture was taken using a wide angle. I was standing by the front door, it’s like 16 feet wall to wall from the front door to the wall where the table is and only 24 feet from the kitchen to the living room.

I’m not getting another table. It’s brand new, and I really like it. I’m just asking for advice on how to tie the two rooms together. I appreciate all the feedback, though. The cabinets were not my first choice but I have to live with them. I bought the barstools recently to compliment the cabinets and make me hate them a little less - it’s all growing on me. But now I do feel more of a disconnect with the gray in the dining area. I am going to look into some gray pendant lights as I really liked that suggestion. We are still looking at window treatments for the whole house as well so thank you for those suggestions.

What other accessories can I use to tie everything together?

    Thank you 🩷
