You could simply hang a long shelf above the air vent and then add more shelves above it.

I'd pick a different paint color for your walls, too. Freshen it up with white paint.

And recover the chair seats in a lighter/brighter fabric. If you are just a bit handy, it is a relatively easy DIY project.

IMO as long as there is some space behind it the long credenza would be perfect and than room for a large piece of art and maybe even lamps

BeverlyFLADeziner _ I asked myself why I hadn't thought about that, and then realized there isn't enough space to place furniture behind the short end of the dining room table. Not enough space to pull out the chairs! Love the idea though.
