Clematis "wilt"

We have a very small circular garden with a lamp post in the middle. As you can imagine with me the area is jammed to the gills with perennials, one being a clematis which has the opportunity to climb the post. I don't know if I even know the variety of clematis, or even the colour of the flowers, as every year, just as it reaches the the top of the lamp post, just as the blooms are about to open it invariably "collapses" :(. This has gone on for at least 5 years. I know it isn't rabbits cutting off the stems at the base. I want to replace it with another clematis and I know "wilt" has been discussed ad infinitum but humour me a bit please ie isn't it the case that "wilt" is more associated with only one of the 3 clematis groups? I wont be able to dig it up and replace it till much later in the Fall as digging there now would mess up too many soon to bloom perennials and so I am just planning ahead.
