So there is supposed to a large gap above the outside trim piece?

That's what base molding installed with no toe kick looks like. No place for your toes. Was that not what you were expecting?

Yes it appears there is a gap above the base moulding and below the cabinet box. I bet they made them exactly the same size and then had to shim the cabinets to level.

Is it the front to back gap you are concerned about? Does the cabinet frame sit a little proud of the doors? And is it pushing the base molding "out"?

I would hate an island with no toe-kicks.

My cabinet maker did an area with no toe-kick on the side panels of the seating overhang. I have hit my feet on that area several times. It is also a bit scuffed because most people expect a toe-kick when they walk up to a counter.

You will have shoe scuffs and vacuum scuffs.

Will you have a toe-kick on the sink side?

Is your countertop going to overhang on the front side, for stools? If you are, then no toe-kicks on the front side won't matter

Are you using 2 cm stone with a built-up or mitered edge? The plywood suggests 2 cm stone. CA by any chance?

No one is clear exactly what you are complaining about, so I was asking you to clarify and I included a screenshot highlighting the problem I was commenting on.

Do you think then that leaving off the trim piece as in the last photo is better? The contractor planned on it looking like the photo you have an arrow on and I thought it looked a bit unfinished. However, the ideal would be a furniture look which would suggest it be added.

Yes

2 sides of our island have a base like you are showing in your picture. The other 2 sides have the toe kick (the gap). The 2 sides that are built like yours are places where the countertop overhangs and there are stools. No toe kick is needed there. But if you are not having stools and no overhang, then in my opinion, you need a toe kick.

Looks like you have frameless cabinets. Also looks like they used flat stock and picture framed it around the cabinets...makes it "appear" like "inset" cabinetry. I have never designed that type of installation before, maybe another cabinet person can chime in on this. I don't care for how it looks there either. Probably would have looked better to have a taller baseboard or push the baseboard up and cover gap with base shoe molding. Although some people hate base shoe. I don't mind it.

regarding taller base trim installed. Maybe this cabinet manufacturer had few options to choose from. If it's an entry level or import line of cabinet, then you won't have a lot to choose from.
