Is this a concern on my Japanese maple?

My ’Osakazuki’ that’s been in the ground for 3 years has some flaking in the bark and many ants were in it. I just pulled on it lightly and it came off easily. It was’t mushy or anything, just flaky and behind it wasn’t mushy either. The tree looks fine and I haven’t been overwatering it. Drainage is good and it’s planted 6 in raised and under the very outer canopy of a silver maple so it doesn’t stay wet.

Also second pic, should I be cutting off this piece of root crossing over the other? I’m afraid it’ll be an entry point to diseases such as verticillium wilt
