I only grow four Evelyn roses in two different locations in my garden. The first Evelyn, below, is in too much tree shade, and is 6-7 feet tall. Once the trees leaf out, E stops blooming, so this photo was a couple of weeks ago.

This Evelyn grows in full sun, and is over 7 feet tall and about 6 feet wide. It shoots out long candelabra canes in late August and early September which I cut back after they bloom.

Most all my roses grow large here in zone 7, hot and dry, SW Idaho in the desert hills outside Boise. I wish I knew how tall PCdM would grow here for comparison with my Evelyn roses. The Evelyn above gets a good pruning every spring. I probably need to prune it harder. Diane

In my zone 5, NW Chicago, my roses were much healthier when I watered with alkaline tap water at pH 9 back in 2013, then I installed 7 rain-barrels in 2014 and water more with acidic rainwater, and it's a decline in health.

jjkOC zone 10a/22, SoCal It depends on what version of Evelyn you get. After spending hours researching and 12 years growing the 1st version of Evelyn, I found 2 other Evelyn versions which have different heights & growth habit than mine.

The 1st version (darker pink and exposed yellow stamens, intense peach scent) is the shortest. The 2nd version is the button-hole & lighter pink and a tall climber (floral soap scent at first, but scent fades after a few days). The 3rd version is also taller with apricot-yellow bloom and large leaves with fruity scent, but not peaches.

Below is a close-up of version #1 Evelyn from Ann in CA, posted on Facebook, note the exposed yellow stamens, and NO proliferation like version #2 Evelyn with green stuff coming out of its buttonhole as posted by growers on Facebook. The exposed yellow stamens is what make the peach scent in version #1 Evelyn so powerful: a few blooms can perfume the entire room. If I pluck off the petals from a spent bloom, my fingers reek of its floral and peach oils for the entire day.

Below is the 1st version Evelyn in my zone 5 spring flush (early June to end of June). It gives 100+ blooms in spring flush (wider than tall), blooms from head to toe, with blooms crawling on the ground. Dimension is 2.5' x 3' due to winterkill down to 6 inch. in spring.

My below version #1 Evelyn blooms vary in colors from deep apricot to deep pink. I have changing weather here, from frost in May to 96 F in June to over 100 F in August, to frost again in mid-Oct. I have different fertilizers: horse manure makes my blooms deeper pink, or alkaline tap water which fades all my bloom, or acidic rain water and biochar turn blooms apricot.

The 1st version (pictured in 2011 David Austin catalog) states that Evelyn is 4' x 3' or 6' as a climber. A decade ago someone asked about the climber dimension in Austin catalog and they were informed that the climber dimension is for GRAFTED on Dr.Huey.

Since yours is own root, the 1st version of Evelyn would be 4' x 3' in a warm climate, but much shorter in my zone 5.

It starts its 2nd flush end of June, and below pic. was taken yesterday July 4, 2024 .. the 1st version Evelyn is less than 2 feet tall in its 2nd flush (just a bit taller than red Munstead Wood next to it):

I have PcDM (Princess Charlene de Monaco) as 7th-year own root in front of my 12th-year own root Evelyn (1st version), and it's a nuisance to get past TALL PcDM to get the booms of 1st-version Evelyn crawling on the ground.

If you have the 2nd-version of Evelyn, then PcDM looks good in front since the 2nd-version of Evelyn is taller & leggy from what I saw on Facebook. PcDm has PERFECTION in health and bush beauty (zero blackspots nor mildew), but the 2nd version of Evelyn is prone to mildew and blackspots according to a rose book reference & other growers.

PcDM would look good in front due to its perfection in health (even for CA growers). My 3 sisters lived in CA, two are still there, one retired in Florida.

Below are pics. of my PcDM in front of my shorter 1st version of Evelyn (never see blackspots nor mildew in my 1st-version Evelyn for the past 12 years as own root since its leaves are very glossy). Below OWN ROOT PcDM is pruned by zone 5 winter down to 6 inch. in May, and it shot up to 2.5 feet in June for its spring flush:

I also have Dee-lish in front of PcDM and Dee-lish is taller:

In late summer, PcDm shot up to 7 feet tall, like a slender tall pillar. I brutally prune it down to 2 feet after the 1st flush, but it can't take hard pruning like version #1 Evelyn and is slower to repeat.

Version #1 Evelyn is pumping out its 2nd flush as of July 4, 2024 (even after I pruned Evelyn down to 1 foot after the massive spring flush), but PcDm is slow to grow its thick cane back. I do so to avoid the 7 feet tall PcDM in the fall which blocks sunlight from Evelyn. PcDM fades badly to white in hot sun, thus can use some shade:

Below show 12th-year own root Evelyn (version #1) being blocked of sunlight by tall PcDM in front (lighter blooms). Version #1 needs full sun, and version #2 Evelyn is prone to mildew, thus both are best in front of PcDM for air flow and more sun if there's no ventilation behind Evelyn like my white siding.

Below is PcDM in hot August near 100 F, note the blooms are bleached to white & less petals, plus odd SUPER TALL canes. Evelyn is the pink blooms behind it against the white siding. Version #1 Evelyn is a continuous bloomer & a prettier bush shape after spring flush.

I have both and here in the PNW the Princess easily doubles Evelyn and would probably triple her if I didn’t regularly wack at her

WOW! What a fantastic tutorial on both of these roses! Thank you so much Diane and Straw for all this helpful information! I wasn’t even aware that there was more than one version of Evelyn!

I am not yet sure what version I have; I’ve reached out to my friend for more info. All I know right now is that she got hers from DA less than 5 years ago, and she thinks it‘s the most heavenly smell, as potent in intensity as Munstead Wood.

It seems like moving PCdM to the back might be appropriate since Evelyn might be robust enough to keep on the shorter side by more attentive pruning when cutting stems for arrangements. The higher petal count might be nicer to have in the front also.

I have LEH planted to the left of PCdM and it might be better to have a higher petal count rose bordered by lower petal count varieties.

Does this logic make sense to others?

One thing I didn't mention is that all my Evelyn roses are grafted on Dr Huey. The Evelyn in the first photo is nearly 20 years old, and the second photo show Evelyn at about 12 years old. Two other Evelyns are also nearly 20 years old. All are from David Austin Roses.

Oursteelers, I have the same thing going on. PCdM grows way taller than Evelyn. PCdM will grow up ramrod staright and compete with the dwarf bananas (about 9ft.) I think if I didnt cut her back she could grow like a short climber like Poseidon does here. Poseidon got to 14ft before I hacked it down when we moved. Evelyn grows out fuller than PCdM. I hope to get Evelyn on Fortuniana. I think she would perform better here. I have 2 Abe's on Fort. and they do so much better here than my Abe's that were on DH. More flowers, less, blackspot.
