What are you doing Monday 7824

Contemplating that time in the 1520s, during the Ottoman siege, when Budapest was saved by Sam Elliot and Woody Harrelson

Maybe avoid Death Valley this week

I truly have not had anything of what I would call real rain. There has been just enough to keep the grass green, kind of. I need to get the kids back. They would do anything to play with the hose.

I will be weeding this week. Because of growing in pots, I cannot pull them out as I lose too much dirt. So, I try to give them a cut at the roots. Last year I started a program where I try to keep them from re-seeding. It has been a win win for me as I had coleus and some small daisy going ramped and this year not too bad.

I also came up with this idea where I would get Purslane to seed some of the areas where weeds grow on the ground cover. They have some pretty flowers and stay low. I got 11 different colors of flowers last year and let them do their thing. One Purslane can make over

55,000 seeds in a season,

times 11 plants

equaled to 1 free plant.

So, weeding and watering are on my agenda with a little repotting. I have to make room for 8 caladiums, and I am out of room. The struggle is real so I will have breakfast first.

The hostas are going good and I am getting photos as summer can be hard. Hint.

I guess it helps to push the go buttons.

It has been hot and lots of humidity. Decent amount of rain, so barely any watering. I need to weed but really have hard time weeding in this heat.

Got some pictures at sunset. Plenty of mosquitoes, chipmunks and slugs. Either chipmunks or rabbits chewing off peppers.

Hubby got new bird feeder, now we have more wars with furry rats.

Pretty much the same as others here, weeding and watering. I doubt if I'll get caught up on the weeding this year, I just concentrate on the nicest beds.

Paula - Bonus, the purslane is edible and supposedly very healthy. As kids we used to munch on it out in the garden and more than once we had it in salads.

    They do come back :-)

I made a new bed with about 20 Golden Tiara as a border. Less than 6 weeks ago a critter (deer I assume) made one of them and only one a snack, leaving only one small leaf. It's coming back pretty good and hopefully next year it will catch up to the others.

Well, this past week I haven’t felt great, a summer virus of sorts. So I did not spend lots of time outside until the weekend. We have had so much rain that I have not had to water either. Lindalana and I are not too many miles apart. I have been enjoying my perennials more than my hostas this year……maybe because so many of my hostas have earwig damage. Also, because of so much rain I think my vinegar drench in spring just got washed away. I went out the other night about 10:30 and did “slug hunting!” I was horrified at how many I found on maybe 10-12 hostas ==> about 75! They weren’t hard to find either…..one of my Munchkin Fires must of had a dozen on it. I should probably do a drench now to prevent further damage. By the next morning, I could hardly walk as my hamstrings were so sore (not something I should be doing anyway.)

I am also a bit overwhelmed with the older hostas this summer. I have a number that need digging up which need tree roots cleaned off…..it’s so much work!! Sigh……

Well the bathroom is 90% complete. We have our shower, all the tile and painting is done. Something with the pipes or a valve or something, may need to be dealt with or not. 🤷🏼‍♀️ We have our sink and vanity for the sink, but hasn’t been installed yet as our contractor is struggling with a knee that he can’t bend right right now. So we are waiting on that to improve so the rest can be finished. I am very happy with how it looks. We did everything without a designer.

Oh duh, lindalana, your streakers are awesome! Old_dirt so sorry about the deer damage…..must be maddening. Couldn’t they just be beautiful and graceful as come by without eating your plants? Another, sigh….

Oh Ann, happy anniversary!!!! I hope you had a wonderful party!! 🎉🎊🎈🍾🥂

We celebrate our 34th in August. Love the rock and my advice for the planter is, don’t water it. Every succulent I ever had I killed by overwatering…..lol

LOL at the statues. They do look like those two actors! No Death Valley any time of year for me. Paula, I hope the purslane idea works out.

Lindalana, what a good hosta year you’re having. I’ve wanted Sharp Dressed Man for a while.

Old_dirt, good thing the deer stopped at one, but it would be nice if they would stick to all their natural food in the woods. But that’s an amazing recovery!

Ann, that’s a big anniversary. Congratulations! Your succulent arrangement is pretty. They’re so cute when they’re little.

Debra, I hope you’re feeling better by now. My hostas have more damage this year, too, even with Sluggo. 75 snails at one time would freak me out! Sounds like a sci-fi movie.

Like everyone else I’ve been weeding when I get up early enough to beat the heat. I can never catch up, but doing something is better than nothing. Also, lots of deadheading. One day I got out the hedge trimmers because they make quick work of cutting back the spireas.

I placed my order for bulbs. I’m planting a lot of small ones this coming fall.

My Elephant Ears in pots aren’t up yet. I dug two up and they have pointy growths. They better hurry up before it’s time to store them for winter.

I bought a new bottle of Liquid Fence deer and rabbit repellent, but it doesn’t stink like it should. Maybe it’s a dud. I sprayed anyway hoping the deer smell it.

Also got some new pruners, and they’re sticking. What’s best to use on them? I have WD40 and a silicone spray handy.

In the U.S. the price of stamps is going up again. If you still use them you have a week to stock up! I ordered some online.

Frances Williams has no desiccation this year. I’m planning on moving the daylilies and hoping that won’t affect my good luck with FW. And it didn’t come back with the green section that it had last year, so I had no Elegans reversion to separate.

thanks debra 🙂..the party was wonderful..50 is a big anniversary and we made great memories of the day...congratulations on 34 years 🎉💕🍾

I hope your virus (?) and hamstring soreness disappear fast..

I had the same thought..don’t overwater..

my succulent bowl received a little rain a few days after I got it..I allowed that to happen to clean the plants and settle the soil..but last night I asked my husband to carry the planter into the garage..rain was coming and I wanted to keep it dry..

sandyslopes..thank you!..married 50 years is kind of unbelievable..

I hope your elephant ears start growing soon..

My parents were married for 50+. They married pretty young as so many people did “back in the day”. 😉

Sixty seven years is a loooog time! My first husband’s grandparents celebrated 75th anniversary!!! They lived well into their nineties though. Still amazing to be together for so many years…..
What was their secret I wonder? 🤔

Nicholworth, happy anniversary! 50 is a rarity nowadays.

I usually dump my indoor plants outside for the summer but for succulents it depends on the rain. They hate wet feet.

Old_dirt, it is not a first time I hear that deer gets selective about what they eat aka location has to be right. What I do not get is reason for it and why they can not find other stuff to eat, it is a summer, everything is green!!!

My fight with chipmunks is going. The moment I apply blood meal they leave but just relocate few feet out. I noticed them digging under concrete stairs, I put lots of salt in that area .

Debra, I have sent you pm.

Sandy, where do you get your bulbs? Van Engelen is my place to go to, I love small bulbs. I get snowdrops blooming by Feb 20 every year.

  • last year

lindalana, I also order my bulbs from Van Engelen. I've always been happy with them. I still don't have snowdrops, mostly because I think they'll bloom early enough to blend in with the snow! I've got more crocus, muscari, and chionodoxa coming along with some bigger Allium bulbs. By the time bulbs get here, I'm so tired of planting anything that I ask myself why did I order them? But when spring gets here, I'm always glad I did!

I have mealie bugs on a few plants. I grow coleus as they are mealie bug magnets for faster detection. I went to Lowe's to buy a hand spray style over a hose spray poison. Oddly most everything hand spray was organic. I have no problem with organic except when I want a killing machine. I did find Seven, but it was not really what I wanted. My son stated that the pot growers are changing the market. Get photos!

Congratulations on the anniversaries and Debra, I hope you are feeling better. Nothing worse than not feeling well.

Ann your dish garden was a very nice gift. Does it have a drain hole? If not, you will have to get drainage. 3 of them are very tender. The 2 strings and the toe. Eventually the purple flower will grow off, but it may take a while. Do not pull it. I do not know why they do that. The rest should be pretty hardy. Well-draining soil do not overwater or over sun. Feed once in a while just not too much. In about 1-2 years that pink guy will pop off. It is the make of the plant but the epiphyllum underneath is probably a Queen of the Night. The saucer I never use them. I have flat tile for plant coasters. They will freeze. Get photos!

I was just outside (Friday) and my hostas are starting to show summer heat damage. Serendipity is normally my first to go down and it has started to show sadder leaves. Big Daddy he does not like the heat either. And it is not even August yet. And he has prime real estate. Get photos!

I am still repotting but I wait to do the hostas until they are dormant. I went out and bought some cheaper purslanes and I am believing that the ones I bought last year are designer divas and sterile. old dirt I have read where you can eat these, but they just do not look tempting. Get photos!

It is Friday forge day! I have become addicted to 'Forged in Fire'. I do not miss my job, but I do miss having 3 different machine shops to work in. Stay cool everyone. Get photos!

I have placed a subliminal message in my post. I hope you see it. Get photos!

  • last year

Paula..yes the terracotta dish has a drain hole..the saucer is unattached..I’ve been moving it into the garage to keep it out of the rain..then back out for some sun..the soil looks like regular potting soil..I’m reading about soil for succulents and will probably change it..I never realized they glue flowers on succulents!..

Indiana winters are cold so the dish comes inside for the winter right?..

it was subtle (😂) but I get your subliminal message lol..
