I use Dirty Labs scent-free bio-enzyme liquid, which comes in an aluminum bottle (!) for real recycling. It gets my clothes clean, including stinky gym gear, and I haven't noticed a residue.

Are enzymes bad for plumbing or skin? I recall a service tech telling me that what I was using (Sonett) was good because it didn’t have enzymes.

I used to use that around 20 years ago and it used to have an even worse problem with sticky residue than the one that I'm currently using. In addition, it did not clean as well back then. Perhaps they have made some changes. Also I found some of the chemicals they use questionable. Apparently Seventh Gen is now owned by Unilever.

I use Tide Free Gentle liquid and dd uses the same, but in pod form. We both like the way it cleans. We use full dose for the load and add Borax to a pre-wash/soak cycle for a little extra umph. Then do a main wash with a smaller dose; line one or one pod--in our case full fill top load washer. In FLers, the dose is pretty low. We find the sticky effect is not a thing doing it this way.

Tide Free Gentle does have enzymes. We don't seem to have a problem with them. Maybe you could find a tiny bottle and give it a try. Once in a great while I'll see a *very* small bottle on the store shelf. I buy that when I need a new in use bottle, as I decant the larger bottle into the small one for daily use.

I don't use fabric softener. Only the laundry rinse product linked in the original post.

I never use cold water. I have a Miele W3038 washer and almost all my loads are Extra White with the water temperature set to Hot (60C, 140F). Every few weeks I run a Wool load with Warm (40C, 104F) setting.

Tide Hygienic Free & Clear works well & if you have dark clothes the bonus is that it is OBA free. Only the liquid, pods have OBAs in them.
