I recognize this is probably breaking many rules of millwork 101, but we're in a bit of a bind.
Our hardwood floors were redone some time ago by previous owners, and it looks like they did it without removing the old ornamental baseboards, because once we pulled those up we found short cuts everywhere, giving us two options : 1) extend/replace the short floor boards to close the gap (not happening), leaving us with option 2) change our new baseboard solution to be 1" thick.
I really want to avoid having to use quarter round or shoe moulding to cover the gaps made by the short floor boards, so considering thicker baseboard. But it leaves us with an interesting casing dilemma. I'd really prefer to not go with >1" casing, so does reversing the norm and butting the thinner craftsman casing into the top of the new baseboard make sense? Or is this the dumbest thing ever? We just want a simple, minimalist look. I figure once caulk and paint is applied this would look fine. Appreciate any ideas.
