Brick Fireplace Redesign

We'd love your input on updating our brick fireplace!

We're planning to replace the mantel with a wood ledge or beam (unless we hear better ideas here) that we'll stain dark brown, similar to the table pictured in the bottom right.

We're open to painting or coating the brick (whitewash, lime-wash, white, black, etc.), but we only want to do that if the current brick is considered outdated. We (and our home) lean traditional, and we feel no pressure to be trendy...but we like the idea of updated!

So what do you think? How might we update our fireplace? Thanks!

It’s a nice looking fireplace. It’d be very helpful if you posted pix of the entire room. And don’t worry about outdated - anything you like and is in good repair shouldn’t be changed just because of current trends.

I think your brick is fine, though I might prefer it painted white. On our FP, we added wood planking similar to the pic. Just an idea.

Rather than alter your lovely fireplace and mantle (one of the best ones I have seen here in a long time!), consider replacing the items on the mantle and adding fireplace tools and a screen to the fireplace. Change out the lamps, books, framed item, and replace with art, candlesticks, an interesting vase, etc. The color of the wood mantle compliments (doesn’t have to match) the wood of your table. Just my suggestions!

Maybe see if better accessorizing will do the trick. There is lots of help on line; aim for height variations and balance. Hard to suggest a look withour seeing your room’s feel - it will take experimenting (just return items that don’t work).

Suggest a basket on hearth also.

If not satisfied, the decision on which brick application to use is so personal and also depends on your room/home. Look at lots of pictures and wait to change mantle to suit (if even necessary); perhaps just staining a different shade will be enough.

Fyi: I painted my two fireplaces white (transformed rooms), but I was confident that’s what I wanted.

Agree with ptreckel and maureen. Accessorizing may be a better step before altering your fireplace and mantel. Can you provide an overall photo showing the entire space as requested?

I love these ideas! Super helpful. You're all really expanding our vision, which is exactly what I was hoping for. I added two photos, as suggested. (Please ignore the large armoire; we'll be removing that this weekend.) Thank you!

What a lovely, cozy room and I think your traditional fireplace works really well as is, other than the accessories (consider a mirror to reflect candlelight and a layered feel).

If interested in suggestions in general, can you show the entire room, as I’m wondering why the rug is on an angle and how to create more balance - ie: consider a lower table with a lamp (vs floor lamp) and chairs closer together.
