dining room (sideboard) needs help

last year

I decided I needed a bigger dining table so I happened across a big black oak restoration hardware table with an open base at 70% off brand new in box. I thought wow that was lucky, it will
Match my black and brass sideboard as well as my giant black round mirror.

I hate it.

There is far too much black, the sideboard looks bright yellow, my cool rug has this stark contrast all of a sudden, and the room just feels like it doesn’t belong in the rest of the home (white, black, saddle leathers, neutral brown woods- modern… I think)

I can’t return the table. I got new chairs to freshen things up and add some texture and white. I plan to add camel/ khaki end chairs in velvet to add color. I think I need to use a light rug to offset the dark of the table and tie the camel in. the sideboard has to go- it’s too yellow/ eye catching and maybe too tall so it overtakes the table.

Options I’m thinking

1)a light medium brown wood would with some depth/ grain to it and black legs might work

2)The RH lady wants me to get a 100% travertine sideboard. It has the neutrals and would tie it all together. Cons- it cost a small fortune, it must be so physically heavy and I would have to get a smaller microwave ( I hide that’s and 2 other small kitchen appliances in my sideboard). Also my kitchen is to the left and the countertops are a grey/ white granite. Worried the travertine will look weird being so close.

  1. paint the sideboard again. Maybe all white to make it kinda disappear against the wall. I wanted to add pole wrap to the doors but the doors won’t open if I add any thickness to the door fronts.

  2. your wonderful suggestion!!

IMO switch the mirror for a piece of art right now all the black is being reflected and so doubles up. I have to say those cajhirs are odd they seem more suited to a vanity for makeup.I seems you have two color schemes going on in a small space the kitchen mostly browns and this space blacks maybe that piece of art and a rug with some bronw in it to tie the spaces togther

Not a pro but I would want different chairs - for me, the current shape & color of the chairs reinforce the table rather than blend with it, I would want a more neutral chair with a bit of wood for warmth

Here is a picture of the rest of the room. Lots of brown

Here is a sideboard I was thinking of.
    the travertine from RH.
And a the camel end chairs I was considering.

I think the gold is off, too shiny and bright. I am trying to think of something that could be done to tone them down. What are the doors made of?

Yes! That’s the problem. I need a wood I think. Something that brings in the brown tones I want to bring in with the rug and camel chairs. Did you see the sideboard I posted?

The doors are wood with a foil overlay. There are divots in the wood to make the pattern. So I can’t just just a contact paper or it will look lumpy. Only option is to paint

I think you can work with the sideboard and table. Remove round mirror, greatly simplify decor around sideboard.

maybe include a touch of gold plus camel and black in a rug.

I don’t have chair advice but the fluffy round ones are quirky enough that I’d think hard before adding another chair style.

I just got the chairs so maybe I return those for something less quirky in a brown. Or maybe keep 2 for head of the table with brown side chairs.

The gold is a lost cause. Every time I see it. I see yellow. I hate the color yellow

Ohh, sorry that you and the sideboard are headed for a break up. you have a nice space and style going on, you’ll figure out what works for you but would love to see the development.

beautiful home! i also like the idea idea of wood chairs to echo the warmth of your surrounding furnishings if you can return them.

Thank you. I had a walnut table before so I did the black and grey to compensate. Now the table is black and I have the opposite problem. I swear, you change one thing and the whole room falls apart.

It seems to me everything you select for this space is a 'primary' object commanding your full attention. Every item cannot be that important or your eyes don't know where to look.

I would consider replacing the round mirror with art. Having two large mirrors in the area seems a bit much.

Also I would relocate your tree. Instead of jamming it in the corner, it should be the divider between your dining room area and the living room area.

The doors on the side board are a bit too yellow gold. I wonder if you could wrap the face of the doors with a metallic gold peel-and-stick material????

That white bookcase is not working in your living room. Too small. Not the right design.

I actually really like that side board with the gold doors. I do really like the last mock up posted above - clear off the sideboard, art instead of mirror and a new rug.

I am not a fan of your stools and chairs though.

Do you have a chandelier above the table? I would maybe consider a table runner or long narrow centerpiece.

If you really don't like the gold, do you think you could tone it down? Maybe there is some sort of treatment to slightly antique it?

The sideboard you currently have seems nice, but try adding some large artwork over it instead of a mirror. Please see the ideas below for how we have decorated sideboards for our clients.
