Can these African Violets still be rescued? How

These stumps are left after about 6 of my beloved A.V's started to perish this spring. They were happy in an east facing window, but I was not aware that the sun's position slowly changed and became stronger. The leaves became spotty, then mushy and died off, one after the other.

But I noticed one or two small green leaves on some of the thick left over stumps. I transplanted one of these stumps, thinking that the pot was the right size while the plant was a healthy full standard size, but must now be too big for this little thing. There are still more stumps in big pots... should I also move them into smaller pots, or am I wasting my time ? And should I cut back the roots if they don't fit into a small pot ? I am always at a loss what to do with these thick stumps or necks...

Is there anything else I could be doing to bring them back to live?
