Why the shinny finish? Use matte. Black Beauty has a brown undertone. Try Black Satin instead. Use cool LED lighting.

1. What gives?

Black Beauty is low in Chroma (colorfulness) so it looks like it would show up like a neutral "black" but it's not low in Value (how light or dark a color looks).

When you consider Value and Chroma at the same time, it's called nuance.

The nuance of Black Beauty is what it is. Changing context or lighting won't change the facts of its color appearance.

This is a list of BenM Blacks/Off-Blacks.

All the colors above Black Beauty are darker. Get some of the chips. Put them in order by Value and then by Chroma. Comparing the colors that way helps understand - actually see - Value, Chroma, nuance.

Sorry but it is a warm black how did you think that would look. IMO you always buy a sample can of a color that is this particular in a space paint it on a poster board maybe 3 or 4 coats with very dark colors and then see how it looks . It lokes like you also used a sheen where matte should be done . I think black bathrooms can be very dramatic but those walls need to be BLACK

Everyone here is giving valuable advice. Patricia Colwell has given you the best advice. Get several sample cans and try them out on the walls.. And, as everyone has said, go with a matte finish paint. That should absorb more light and should give you a darker, more saturated color.

I know a fantastic cleaner, who ALWAYS leaves the tp with a precise over the roll folded point.

I too have a black bathroom and it is very black. I used Dunn Edwards or Behr and got the blackest black I could find. I only use Matte or Flat.

It is a brown black... but it looks even more so when in contrast to the cabinet and soap dispenser. Perhaps take that soap dispenser with you when you go on your next paint chip picking. Also, a more matte finish can feel deeper, darker where a shiny finish reflects the light and can make it look lighter, brighter.

Are you going to have a TP holder, or is it going to say on the back of the toilet? What is your plan for a hand towel holder? Do you plan on installing a mirror- if so, does it have a frame or no? Or what else on the walls? Some of your wall space is going to be broken up by those things, so it wouldn't be just expanses of wall. All the other things are going to add color/texture to the room.

y'all realize when you paint you have to remove all the tp and towel holders off the walls, right? And sometimes while you are in the middle of the project the bathroom still needs to be used as a bathroom.

I didn't know mentioning TP would lead to such a lovely conversation 🤣 I suppose we could use some black ones but I don't think Costco carries it 🤪

We did try several samples but only with one coat. As I said, it looked black after one coat throughout, but not anymore, and especially not next to the vanity, etc... BTW the ceiling is also black.

We will have to do another coat (hopefully just one??) of something else to cover it. I guess we might as well go with BM Black in matte (yes, we used eggshell 🤷🏼‍♀️  What can I say? We're learning...) 

The other thing planned is a mirror we already had which has kind of an antique brass frame. Still looking for a light to match that will be above it, shining down on it like on a painting.  

Does the above paint sound like the right plan?  

BTW I'm Team TP Over all the way and do not understand how anyone can think otherwise 🤣

I'm an "over" girl myself. However, my son in law said that placing it "under" avoids children getting into the bathroom and easily unrolling the entire roll! Never thought of that!

Well, you came to the right place. I stick around because these folks are super talented, and share on point insight with a side of humor.

The good news is the hard part is done. Prep and first coat are the most work. Perfect foundation for one (probably 2) coats of Black in matte.

When we were buying paint for our fireplace wall (floor to ceiling red brick), the store owner with whom we’d shopped for a number of years, said to just go with BM BLACK. So we did. We used BM Aura paint, matte finish, and were/are very happy with the result. It looks like straight up black, because it is 😊

So in case anyone cares, we're living with it as it is for now... Though someday, I'm certain we'll go BM Black. I love my powder room!

Yes, it's paint and a pain to redo. And we've had lots of other priorities.

IDK about the over under issue...not one here...but a heavy NO to any brand of TP that has the obnoxious commercials they do. Given this thread is two years old and it's my fist knowledge of 'scalloped' edges I am going to say not many must have been as impressed as some as it must not have lasted. Limited market fail????

The type of lighting fixture that you use will also affect how the paint appears.

I've seldom chimed in about the over versus under debate. Will say that bidets or bidet wands that can be installed on a conventional toilet is preferential.

Your bathroom, looks very nice. I would be tempted to leave it too.

As to over and under, I am an over person, but, my daughter is an under, and she thinks its fun to turn the rolls to under before she leaves. I dont know about toddlers having a hard time with under the roll, but, I have a dog, that can get it all unrolled and down the hallway in 5 minutes, whether its over or under.

@Norwood Architects, I guess you don't do franks and beans on Saturday night. (Boston, here). A bidet would not do the job. Maybe a power washer?
