Typically, the little round balls found in the soil and on the top of containerized plants from the nursery ARE fertilizer, almost always a slow release fertilizer similar to Osmocote. There are various brand names and each can act and look bit differently from another but they are all relatively similar. The ones used by the growers are a commercial product not available to the general public but Osmocote IS available and is a perfectly acceptable alternative.
