Is there a rule about mixing metals?

For our new construction, we were advised by an interior designer that it’s a good idea to have two metals represented in your house. To follow that, we were planning to have 2 black lights over a picture window in the kitchen and 3 black pendent lights over the kitchen island. All the faucets and door knobs will be brushed nickel and the appliances will be stainless steel. That just leaves a ceiling fan in the connecting living room to be either black or nickel. The cabinets are a medium tone gray color. Is this a good rule to follow, or should all metals be the same? The brushed nickel would blend in more with the cabinets, the black would stand out. Here is a photo of the space looking from the living room towards the kitchen window. Thoughts?
