Dryer conversion question

Hi I have a new plumber and I ordered a dryer. lowes sent me an electric dryer. I need gas. I know I told Lowes I needed gas, but they ordered an electric dryer. So it is here and the plumber who is young said he can covert it. Well I am reading now this is a bad thing to do and now I bet Lowes won't believe me and won't take it back. Should I allow him to convert it? He ordered the set for 30 dollars.

If Lowe's sent the exact dryer that you ordered, return it and order another that is gas. You'll have to pay the delivery, restocking, whatever charges, but that is the better scenario than converting an electric by an eager puppy.

Looking online it seems like it can be done but I would make sure the plumber is certified in gas line plumbing.

Did you talk to Lowes? I would first call the manager and explain you were sent the wrong type of dryer. I'm sure this happens all the time. They should be able to exchange it (maybe for a nominal fee).

Lowes most likely didn't order the wrong appliance, you did. Look at the sales slip.

If the sales slip is correct, they should take the return.

Convert what?

The new electric dryer into a gas dryer? Possibly is doable but would involve a lot of parts and cost, require a skilled appliance servicer (not a plumber) and you're not likely find one willing to do that, and it would void the warranty on the new dryer.

Convert your 120v power supply for a gas dryer to 240v for an electric dryer? That job calls for an electrician, not a plumber.

I would definitely have Lowes exchange the dryer, if you can. That is the simplest thing to do.

If you are stuck with this electric dryer, there may be a disused 240v dryer outlet there, or you can have an electrician add one.

Converting electric dryer to gas - won’t this void the warranty? Or complicate future repairs?

For peace of mind and the safety of your home, heed the advice above-return the dryer and verify the next one shipped will be gas. If you elect to keep the dryer, have an experienced electrician make certain you have the proper outlet.
