Could be Datura stramonium?

It's definitely in the Solanaceae and the datura is a very reasonable suggestion.

I was just thinking that there are purple flowered daturas. Or purple-white. Not exactly what would be considered lavender :-) But they are cultivars of D. metel.

Definitely looks like Datura - a.k.a. Jimson weed - to me as well.

I looked it up - has rather ominous headline descroption - Deadly!! Well, I shant chew on the leaves. Have no pets or kids so I will keep it for a while. Has a nice scent as well. Says the description. Thanks to all.

FWIW, a late friend once told me that when he was a boy - back in the 1930s/40s, I think - he had asthma and their Dr. prescribed inhaling the smoke of jimson weed (!)

There are a couple of ways the friend could have been misled. There are plenty of unscrupulous vendors on eBay selling packages of misnamed seeds. And there are also vendors selling a Datura which they're calling Lavender Lassie.

Just a few years ago (it may still be happening), at least one eBay seller was foisting off RADISH seeds as rose seeds. There were several posts about it in the rose forum. The instructions with them said to refrigerate them for six weeks before sowing them the next Spring. Since the time frame for a buyer dispute is 90 days, the seller most often escaped any consequences (after 90 days you can't even leave negative feedback to warn others), the buyers had no recourse, and were just out their money.

Let's not even get into the seeds being offered for those photo-shopped neon blue "roses".

wow - Now that's pretty unreal. I had no idea about fake seeds. She says she bought them at a place called Job Lot - they have seeds from Park usually - unless this plant was from an unknown brand. Then I would be suspicious. Thanks very much.

I got some in a plant swap ages ago, on purpose. They are an archaic medicinal plant. and when I worked at some university chair for plants, ingeneering and design, I came across an old book on herb cultivation. THis Datura was in it as well, and a black and white photograph of a cultivar with smooth seed pods which makes them much easier to harvest

Here is the bloom - it is pretty. Interesting plant to say the least.
