I would probably select the furniture first. There are fewer choices in colors than in rugs, so I'd rather try to find a rug to go with the furniture than furniture to go with the rugs. Can you post pics of any furniture you're considering, as well as pics of the room so we can see floor color?

You can’t go wrong with Persian carpet in an mcm home. I like buying them vintage because the price is great and they already have wear so I’m not concerned when a little dog drool or red wine spills.

Post the room.... all dimensions etc. Be sure of 10 x 14. Walls, window doors. Plan the furniture arrangement : )

I have a MCM house we have 3 huge dogs and white leather sofas and 4 chairs in our LR in this pic there is a rug we loved but one dog was sick and peed once too many times so it went. We bought these from Amazon very affordable and I love them so do the dogs .The dog hair vacuums out much easier that the old plush rug too. Our LR is large so we did 2 seating areas but no TV we have a media room in the walk out. I do agree figure out furniture lay out before choosing a rug We have 2 rugs that match in style and color but one larger than the other

Highly suggest waiting to purchase until you select and place your furniture. In the meantime narrow down attributes, look on line at living rooms that appeal to you noting the rugs used, and visit some local stores to compare and ask questions around content/durability. Inquire if padding would give the thick feel you are after and if so, more rug options will open up. You could also layer to get more comfort and will save money as the more expensive rug can be smaller.

My question to you, Carly, is how the sofas will be arranged. You may need two rugs not one large one.

Meantime this rug is from etsy.com and it comes in many sizes. I like it because it will neutral down the floor tone. With the accent colors you want to use, suggest you choose a different sofa color than the rusty tone and consider blue, as there is a touch of it in the rug.

Take a picture of the room and 'try' the rug "virtually" on your computer. Some websites like RugsDirect.com have a rug 'visualizer' that allows you to place the rug in your room.

Avoid the 10 x 14 rug if you can. The selection of rugs of that size is less and the cost is $$$$.

Go to a LOCAL flooring retailer and you'll be able to order any style carpet and have it bound into a rug. You won't be tied to standard rug sizes, you can go custom. Usually less expensive than premade (depending on the carpet brand/fiber etc.)

Hopefully your floor refinisher told you this but DO NOT put a rug down on the refinished floors until they've had at least 30 days to cure!

Why on earth would you avoid the right size rug? IF it is the right size rug? @ 10 x 14? There are many ways to get that at just as many prices, including having a great broadloom cut and finished to the INCH you may want!

You are asking us what carpet will go with white walls and a mid toned wood floor.

There is almost nothing that would not work with your floor and walls.

You will need to provide more information on what colors you would like and what patterns you like. I hate the distressed, faded look of many of the rugs that are popular. I like bold patterns, but that is the only thing I can base my recommendations on, and what I like isn't helping you pick what you like.

I have found that using a good carpet pad under the area rug makes it more cushy.

I have a busy household with 2 dogs and I am not one to be overly fussy about my home. I like it clean, but it does not need to be perfect. When I purchased an area rug for my living room I decided to look for something I liked that was inexpensive.

I purchased this in 2017.

When it came, I was in love with the color and pattern, but I knew it was inexpensive and assumed based on the price that it would not be very durable, so I ordered a second one as a backup. I am still using the one from 2017 and it is still looking good. No traffic patterns, no stains, no issues. The backup is packed away in my basement.

At this point my carpet has lasted 7 years ($32,00 per year).

I did find that by doing an image search that the price for the same carpet ranged from $224 to $700. It was sold through Bed Bath and Beyond, Houzz, Amazon and several other places. I ordered my first one through BBB even though it was more expensive because I could return it locally. I liked it, so I asked BBB to match the price - they refused, so I ordered it again through Houzz (lowest price) and returned the first one to BBB.

With a dog and two kids you may want to go inexpensive until you know how hard on the carpet they will be. If the dog chews up a sharpie or the kids draw a picture on your rug with a sharpie you may have a ruined carpet. A few hundred dollars is easier to forget than a few thousand.
