It's a stunning gigantic tree of course. One might praise the "work" done on it, others might call it mutilation.

These massive trees were being clear-cut over vast areas for lumber until 1976 when laws were passed to protect them.

We saw larger trees on the way to this one. Someone said they stopped doing this sort of thing for quite some time now. Thank goodness.

I take it you're traveling through northern CA? It's a tree lovers delight and I'm looking forward to seeing more pictures. If you are in the area, I recommend Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens. You can then relax and enjoy a beverage at North Coast Brewing in Fort Bragg. Not a bad way to spend a day. :)

We came through the redwoods to

Pier 39 then toured Yosemite and the valley for the day.

Saw my first mountain hemlock east of Coeur d Alene along with Douglas fir, pinus contorta and several others.

Toured Columbia River.

Saw huge Sitka spruce at rose garden in Portland. This one wider than the park benches.

Dune buggies ride the Oregon sand dunes and a jet boat ride up the rouge River. 32 miles one way.

I didn't take many pictures.

I did see 100 ft incense cedars, some very large Sequoiadedrons, sugar pine, Jeffrey pine, Colter pines, Doug firs, western wp, etc etc and amazing landscape including El Capitan and some amazing waterfalls.

Other than that, not much to tell. ;-)

I'm reasonably sure I saw a nice specimen of pinus longaeva, although a bit north of its native range. When exiting Cal on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada range at altitude.

Awesome areas -- visited those same areas in the early 90s in late May. Entered Yosemite thru the east entrance, Tioga Pass, which had just opened. At the top were still piles of snow along the road way higher than the car.
