Crafting Conundrum

My art therapy took a new turn this summer. Instead of decoupaging oyster shells, I turned to decorating smallish beach rocks. Same process as the shells, but I prefer the rocks as they are less fussy than the shells and more useful as a finished product. Our beach in my community is known as Rocky Beach--no shortage of free, raw material for me. I've done a bunch and can predict an issue of doing too many with no exit plan. Think zucchini in summer. But what to do with the finished rocks? Etsy? Gift to everyone I know?

Would you buy something like this? What price would be fair? (and it's totally cool to tell me that they look like rock refrigerator art). Etsy has some, but most are hand painted--mine are not. Plus, mine aren't the ubiquitous home depot river rocks that seem to proliferate on Etsy. Mine are larger and irregular. The final coat is high gloss but doesn't photograph as such. Also, the designs are very smoothly applied, what looks like dimples and such is the natural surface of the rock.

Thanks for the feedback!

Jo

I have bought some handpainted rocks as doorstops, but they are much larger. I think they are more salable if they are a regular shape (e.g. a perfect oval). I could see the bunny ones as paperweights? Not sure if the price point would be worth the shipping and handling chores; maybe ask a local boutique if they would carry them? In that case I'd chose local motifs.

Very cute and nicely done! I would not buy something like that because I'm just not into buying stuff that doesn't serve a useful purpose for me. I would buy a larger rock doorstop like Mtn mentioned however. I think I'd put them in a nice basket or bowl on display somewhere in my house. Then when people comment on how cute they are you can tell them to take one if they wish.

Those are cute! I agree that a group of theme ones - same color, subject, etc would look nice in a shallow glass bowl.

I have a friend who does the oyster shell version and does pretty well selling them at local shops owned by friends and at craft shows. They live in Charleston which I think is a lot more touristy than your area.

They are very cute. I have a collection of stones just outside my back door in a spot that grew nothing but weeds despite my best efforts. Your stones might be cute interspersed with these or in a rock garden.

Those are very cool, Jojo. My favorites are the hydrangea and the buoys. I tried the shells last year but found the process too annoying for my impatient spirit. I don’t have ideas for you but I would like to join your Rocky Crafts Club!

I have taken a couple of weaving classes this year and decided to see how to incorporate yarn/threads with rocks from the beach near our cottage.

Ha, I also have a spot like that near my front door of the cottage, ded. I have been working on filling it with shells this summer, but there are a bunch of painted rocks in there too. DD and I used to paint a lot of rocks when she was younger.

If you don't need to make $ and are just doing it for a fun, creative outlet, I would do what some around here do and place them around in the community for people to find. People seem to LOVE finding them as treasures to keep.

Very cute. You may need a catchy name (Pet Rock was successful for the Pet Rock inventor) and a story.

Story idea - Having pretty rocks will bring world peace, happiness and good looks.

At our lake cabin its not unusual to find decorated rocks along the lanes and trails. I think it first started early in the pandemic, when parents were trying to find ways for their children to spread joy. Someone in the community continues to leave sweet rocks, many obviously done by children but some times I’ll see special ones like yours. I don’t collect them but others do.

Story idea#2 - Hiding pretty rocks for others to find will bring world peace, happiness and good looks to the hiders and finders.

Because we rarely use A/C in Maine, the doors and windows are always open. We need doorstops. Twoexamples I bought maybe a decade ago, one painted and one crocheted lace!

    Those are very pretty!

FWIW, our city had a project some years ago where people would decorate stones and leave them out and about town for others to find. You were supposed to take a photo where you found one and post it to a FB group page. The kids were really into it - but they mostly just collected the stones they found and put theirs out for others to find.

Love the rocks and door stops. I agree a decoupaged doorstop (or even or smaller stone), custom for the area, would be a fun souvenir. Have you seen TheGiftedShop on Instagram? She decoupages champagne bottles, pumpkins, shells and wood Christmas trees. I have found some small wood turned tree ornaments on FB Marketplace that I am going to decoupage for Christmas this year.

I have been practicing painting rocks, which I pick up at Lake Michigan, but haven't decoupaged any yet. A few years ago, my niece and I painted one Thanksgiving themed rock for each dinner attendee. They turned out really cute!

There is a woman on Instagram and Etsy, Maine Salty Girl, who makes beach themed things. I love her painted rocks, usually custom order - could easily be decoupage, though.

Just had another thought, if you're looking to sell them - glue a strong magnet to the back.

    Those are really cute!

I like the idea of leaving them in random places. I can just see a child "finding" one and the joy it would bring!

I agree with others...if you don't need the money then just leave them in places....no need for the felt backing...just paint all over.

I used to do that with a word of inspiration on a rock and leave them along my hiking trail. It was fun to see if they were found or not, still there or not when I returned. People who find them have the option to leave them, keep them, or move them.

Yours are so lovely compared to my calamities!

I think they look great. You could sell them by themselves as well as in kits with paracord or macrame and instructions for making key chains and bracelets. I think they would make a good gift for people who rent local Airbnb's.

Sue, your rocks are really wonderful. It’s going to sound weird, but to me they almost have a spiritual / natural world feel to them. I feel like they could be displayed individually. I am inspired!

Jojo, I love your painted rocks. My DD was into painting rocks as a calming therapy for a while when she was still working as an ED trauma nurse. She would hide them around town like others have mentioned. I believe most people put their initials on the bottom, and there was a FB group called Rocket City Rocks so the finder was encouraged to post a photo of their find. Some left the rocks in other places when the traveled.

I also like the idea of giving them to friends when they visit your home.

I've been looking for decorative door stops. 💕 If they were fist sized...? I really like the one with the leopard. The lavender hydrangea. The B & W rabbit. "IF" your were giving them away to friends....? They would be well received. I'd like to buy a few....they're VERY pretty! That's my honest opinion...

OH...I used to have several with lady bugs next to the front door as decoration. The renters took them when they PCS'ed.

    What is PCS?

Permanent Change of Station? Military relocation?

If you do decide to ”seed” them for people to take, agree there is no need for felt but I would also paint or stencil ”free to a good home” or something similar so people will feel free to take them.

I think it’s a common enough happening that people understand when found out and about that they are gifts meant to bring joy. Lots of people just enjoy for a while then relocate them.
