I'd butt tile to the door frame

and under the 2nd shelf. not in line with any faux window grid. (half way up the frig side.)

mount a sheet of steel for magnets on the inside of your cabinet doors to hang your childrens' art or frame them for a gallery wall.

Why do you have a faux window? Why is it a mirror? How do you wash dishes while trying not to stare at yourself in the mirror?

Consider getting rid of the mirror.

The sink is not centered. That makes having shelves on both sides of the sink is going to emphasize the asymmetry. Consider putting them only on the left side.

Speaking of the sink, you should consider a drop-in sink if it is not too late. it will protect your wood counter tops from the water.

You need something, even if it is just a trim piece, to the left of your dishwasher.

You have an electrical outlet in your wall. If you are planning to move that, tile up to the under side of the first or second shelf if you wish, and maybe install plugmold under the first shelf. If you are not going to move that, ask your tile setter how he will incorporate it into the backsplash. good luck.

@eam44 we did consider removing the faux mirror, but we actually like it. my husband does dishes while watching tv 😆. We did all the work ourself (except electricity) so things may not be picture perfect but we are proud of it.

we are going to put up two lamps on either side of the faux window. And I am considering a tile like the one pictured below.

If you are setting your own tile, don’t use glass tile (if that’s what’s in the image). I can give you more details if you need them.

Honestly, tiling up to the first shelf is great, you don’t have to do more than that. You should make a plan now for how to tile around the outlet. There are videos online that can help.

Speaking of tile, you have an eclectic, highly personal space. Your tile should be eclectic and personal too. It will not cost you more to be artistic, although all of these are expensive tiles.
