So backwards IMO but I think a simple jute look rug is probably the best .

Love the fabric pattern! Pick area rug last. Get your furniture pieces in. The area rug will peek out from underneath the sofa, chairs, end tables and coffee table. So it’s minor compared to the drapes and furniture.

I also like #1. You might also consider natural fabric with no pattern.

I would also choose #1. Floral and plaid seems like a dated look to me.

I can see the sofas in the green of the drapes with a beige accent chair. You could do maybe do a small pattern for the chair.

Thank you all so much! The visualization is so hard for me. I made some new mock ups of my room based on the suggestions here (the house is still under construction).

I really dislike the sofa but we may have to keep it for a while until I can convince DH to let go of it. In the meantime, I am really making an effort to soften up the space despite all of that dark leather. Ugh. I can’t decide whether to go with light beige or green chairs.

On the long blank wall at the left, I plan to put a shallow console table with some artwork above, and a nice lamp. We have an antique Pembroke table I might use between the 2 chairs- if there’s enough space.

I do love the rug with the cute green trees, so I might just put that in the adjacent breakfast room underneath my table. That way its pattern doesn’t interfere with the living room so much.

I like the cozy feel of the plaid. But I think you could wait until you have your furniture in place. Then select.

Love that striped ottoman & bordered rug in your mockup. The leather sofa might surprise you by ”working.”

@houssaon and @njmomma: I will get the furnishings in place before making a final choice on the rug. Good advice there.
