How much space will a pedestal even save? Will the space even be useable? I would do a vanity for the storage. The only time i have had a pedestal sink was in a powder room but there was a linen closet for storing cleaning items, extra towels and toilet paper.

I replaced a damaged pedestal sink with a small vanity. It was a small bathroom, and I needed storage for cleaning supplies.

It's all about the floorplan. Sometimes a pedestal is really the only thing that fits. No advice is useful here unless it's based on your actual floorplan. Can you post a sketch, with dimensions of every wall, doorway, and window?

If you possibly have the space for a sink, in a small vanity, I would definitely go with the vanity. Any amount of storage, is better than no storage.

if budget is an issue I think you get more for your $$$ with a pedestal sink - but a lot depends on storage needs

Which has more pro’s than con’s for your needs/usage - what do you have presently - is it working. How much room is there. Will your flooring need to be changed if replacing with a pedestal.

Thoughts on Vanities:

- Most people are going to say go this direction because they provide storage, but how big a vanity can you have? I lived the first 9 years of my marriage with a 36" vanity, and it was not much better than a pedestal sink. We had a next-to-useless 6" drawer and space under the sink.

- I'd give up something else in the bathroom -- maybe make the tub or shower more narrow? -- to get a larger vanity.

- Consider storage elsewhere. A large medicine cabinet? An in-wall cabinet? A small hutch just outside the door? You've gotta have some space somewhere.

Thoughts on Pedestal Sinks:

- Obviously, you'll be losing storage, so where can you gain some? Consider all the above possibilities.

- Definitely add a glass shelf above your pedestal sink for your "always outs". Those look good and are practical.

Why would one need toothpaste, a hair dryer, in a powder room? Unless a mobility /convenience to a second floor bath?

Even then.....the toothpaste possibly but a hair dryer maybe not? : )

Our guest bathroom is 40" wide. Anything more than a shallow pedestal sink, and you wouldn't be able to walk past the sink access the toilet. That's why floorplan matters. Post one, and commenters here like Jan will give you useful advice.

Pedestal sinks look better (IMO) but vanities are more practical. Usually there is nowhere to set anything down (comb, makeup, razor, etc.) on a pedestal sink. In my experience the toilet winds up as the staging area for everything, which has a certain ick factor. It's not a big problem with a powder room but a constant irritation in a working bathroom.

And where will the toilet paper, tampons and cleaning supplies live? If you have a nearby cabinet or closet, maybe in the hallway, you can use that for storage. Think through how the room is used and let that drive your decision.

I have a small bathroom and I hate that I have a pedestal sink and no storage. I have a medicine cabinet and above toilet storage but still plan on swapping my sink out for a small vanity

Oh the Pedestal sink.

If you were to stay that phrase to my husband. He would remember the big ugly fight we had many many years ago. I wanted this house with a pedestal sink. He put in an offer they turned it down, He wanted to walk away. I did not. He won. We didn't by that house. I was very sad. I am embarrassed to say, I did the mean wife thing and kind of held it against him as we hunted for the right house.

I never got that Pedestal sink. In all the moves after 6 more houses later and we never had a pedestal sink.

Funny, Now I don't want it. I find I need a place to hide the extra toilet paper or store extra towels. I like a small tiny sink that can store things beneath.

Your space will dictate the sink. And if you are lucky enough to have enough space to do either go for it. Get what you like. I discovered that my pedestal sink desire was just a fad for me. I like the function of a sink with even a tiny bit of space underneath.

What is the purpose of the room? If it is a powder room or guest bath a pedistal sink may be perfect. If it is used daily by people taking a bath or a shower having some storage is better than no storage.

My sister had a great powder room storage answer. She had a pedestal sink, but wanted something to hold a few roles of TP, spare hand soap or hand towel. She used an old CD storage container - each shelf held a role of TP and the top shelf held the other small items.

We have a small bath in our walkout basement that was always an "awful basement bathroom." It was serviceable, but not pretty at all. Since our guest room (very nice, looks out to garden/yard) is there, too, I finally had it redone. I love pedestal sinks (have one in my bathroom) and since this is a small space of only ~6'x7', I wanted one in there. We changed the door to a pocket door, put in a larger shower 36"x58", and added open shelving at the end of the shower. I had to use a shower screen because the glass is only 11 and five eighths inches from the edge of the sink. I think it all looks lovely. I left the shelves open, although I suppose a door could be added, but I prefer it this way.

As you can see, we also had to work around a bulkhead, hence the shower screen. My cleaning supplies are in a cabinet in the laundry area right behind the sink wall.

I could not be happier with having a pedestal sink.

1/2 bath/powder room on first floor off kitchen. Pedestal sink (got rid of the vanity when remodeled in 2015). Found a small painted corner storage cabinet for the opposite corner; has a louvered door and a small pulldown door at the top similar to this. (mine is light grey).

Is it a powder room? I missed that. Still, if my husband's soaking in the tub in the evening, I often brush my teeth /wash my face for bed in the hall bathroom. I keep "my things" in both places.

My daughter has one of those uncomfortable nose-to-toes powder rooms /maybe 3'x7' ... and she has shelves above the toilet where she keeps toilet paper, sanitary supplies and medicines. I don't particularly like that cabinet because it's not so easy to reach, and I always have to close the toilet /fear that something could fall in.

Not in a bathroom. Not even in a powder room if it can be avoided.

Lots of families use all the bathrooms to get ready in the morning. Especially with school kids, a second set of toothbrushes, combs etc. can be useful. Hairdryers are often kept in kids' rooms and taken to whichever bathroom is free.

I have a powder room only on the first floor. So I keep a hairbrush, first aid supplies, pain relievers, toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash, cleaning supplies, dog grooming stuff, sunscreen, toilet paper & extra box of tissues, etc, in the powder room vanity. Not a mobility thing but a convenience thing.

We have a very small 1/2 bath and we used a sink with a cabinet under it that is only 12" deep, but the sink is 19 1/2" deep. bought it at Menards. I wanted the storage for cleaning supplies and TP.
