I think it's actually better, so that when someone walks in there there isn't something immediately beside their head. I'd put a shelving unit there instead

I'm with Toronto Vet. I wouldn't want it all the way to the wall, but it does look like it could be extended a bit; I'm guessing the end of the island lines up with the end of the cabinet run. I'd be more concerned that the lowers look like regular cabinets rather than drawers. Drawers are much handier and definitely worth it to do an upgrade.

That is the BEST way to design that. You don't want all the openings crowded and claustrophobic.
