In any case, you do not have to match these grey floors with your furnishings and decor. And that is really pretty much the case with any color wood or wood type floors.

In this case, I would suggest that you get rugs, and coordinate your furniture with your rugs, since you are planning on getting rugs, anyway. Get rugs that you like, and go from there.

This is Raleigh,nc. Yes, we r licked to this house and closing in September . Except the hardwoods, we liked everything else. What you said about not necessarily coordinate with wood color makes sense. Thank you.

IMO gray is neutral and almost every color goes with it . Maybe a bit of info as to your style could help. I have floors not wood but a laminate that looks like a gray/ green slate I find it really neutral. Once you get rugs furniture lighting it will be fine. This is very peaceful and pretty . Maybe share some colors you like .

Agree with the others - resist the urge to “match” the floors and bring in warm pretty colors, (trying to match the floors must be how some homes end up all white and grays) - enjoy your new home, I grew up in NC - such a pretty state!

IMO no t brown or taupe the mustard maybe . Maybe start with a rug you love since you have nothing maybe that will give you a palette to work with .

Blue or green will work better than brown/taupe/mustard. You need brown wood floors for that color scheme. Mustard or rust will work as an accent. Look for a rug and go from there, or find a piece of art that inspires you. Navy or cream sofa (see the picture Patricia posted).

Brown, taupe, mustard would work fine. Your instincts are good. Brown (earth) gives life to grey. Those colors can balance out all the greys in the space.

Gray is a neutral. I feel like almost anything goes with it. Patricia posted a picture I was just looking at that would be nice. It also depends on how bold or colorful you want to be.

It can be a quiet space with a few warm pieces to cut the gray.

Or you can integrate a little color with things that area easy to change over time

Or go a bit bolder ( that is where I would go )

Take you time. Find one piece that you love - a rug, a piece of art, a textile. Then build from that.

See, I’d never use that rug because it’s more grays & white, over a large area. I eoujcxwsnt yo warm up ggd gray floors with a ring that had SIME gray, bug one to 3 other colors that I kind and would plan to use in either major amounts like upholstery , of in accents such as pillows, art, accessories.

Will you have any wood furniture? If so what stains and textures? The right wood finishes can look great with gray floors, but if helps to have either rug or upholstery that ties them together. Try to make don ex king of indo vision boards of rooms you love that have similar wall paint & flooring as yours.

@marmiegard_z7b She wanted to bring warmth to the space. She specifically mentioned she was considering bringing in Brown, Taupe, Mustard - and some people here shot it down. She was absolutely on track with those ideas and it would be a good way to go. People here told her she needed to bring in blue and green instead. The last thing she needs in that space is more cool colors - and especially when she specifically was considering a warmer palette. So since she probably doesn't want a room full of blue, green, etc. she is possibly now opting to just match the greys and whites that are already there.

Everyone sees color differently, but I think taupe isn’t that great since it’s usually a cool pinky- brown. So for me also, take & mustard are hard to mix & match. I didn’t comment on those colors, but it’s hard for me to say, yes! get taupe! I’d have to see it. Also, I’m very leery of how an OP who may have trouble envisioning a finished room, could be misled and say , ok, I got a taupe rug! I got the mustard chair! That’s why I’m big on whole room photos of selected color schemes that clearly “ go” together and see which ones appeal to the poster. Do you like the black, white, red & gray? The gray, ivory, chocolate, caramel? The gray, white, blue & lemon?

I’d use rich browns ( as in wood furniture too), maybe rust, caramel. Some deep blue can go with that if you like blues but don’t want to get too icy- blue. But there are loads of other color combinations out there.

Plus, OP, do you have upholstered furniture, or ideas for what you need? Most people I find have limited sources for their sofas & chairs and then those come in maybe 1-4 colors. Especially once you consider the material & comfort level. So I often think you need a bead on what you might get for those. Plus the furniture arrangement affects what size rug. Hence I have trouble with “ first get a rug”. But rug “ searching” can be great, like art searches even, as inspo pics for what colors you see combined, & what grabs you. And what sofa or chairs you could see working with it. You might even end up getting that rug!

OP, you can do a HOUZZ search of photos and plug in type of room, flooring, wall color. You can of course do LR but you will also get some color scheme ideas from any room photos that have similar walls & floors.

Thank you for your response. It’s late here in NYC and maybe late where you are, too. I don’t have time to debate this right now. I will just say that there is zero reason why she cannot use browns, taupes and/or mustard/gold colors in the space.

Freedomplace1, thank you for writing the list of colors that could go well with the grey floors. The rug I’ve posted earlier had a tinge of gold/mustard lines, it doesn’t highlight it seems, I’m still considering adding mustard/caramel kind of shade to upholstery. Appreciate all the feedback

I love that rug! That warm vein through it gives you a link to beautiful wood and browns to mix with the gray. I love the idea of mustard and browns - warmer tones for the space.

You have lots of surfaces for design - rug, drapes, artwork, pillows, furniture, end tables, bookcase etc. The boldness or calm of all the pieces is to be decided by you.
